Seat Alhambra
103 kW common-rail 2.0 TDI in the Alhambra 7M late phase. Oil pump driver can fail; timing belt replacement is a mandatory interval. More modern and quieter than the PD predecessors.
Alhambra diesel with decent pull
In the Alhambra 7M the 2.0 TDI with 103 kW provides adequate power for the family van. Fully loaded trips are managed without drama; fuel consumption remains acceptable for the vehicle class. Not a sporty unit, but a reliable companion.
Engine Weaknesses 4
The BRT (CR-TDI in the late Alhambra 7M) shares the balance shaft module problem of early 2.0 TDI CR engines. The oil pump drive can wear, cutting off oil pressure — turbo and bearings are damaged. Documented at 178,000 km.
Symptoms: Oil pressure warning light, quiet ticking before failure, metal swarf in oil sump
Like all 2.0 TDI engines of this era, the BRT uses a timing belt that must be changed every 150,000 km (recommended: earlier). In the Alhambra as a seven-seater with high weight, possibly subject to greater loads.
Symptoms: No warning signal, engine stall on failure, severe valve damage
The BRT 2.0 TDI CR is affected by the notorious oil pump hex drive failure. The drive quietly wears between 100–150 k km. Replace preventively at timing belt change (~€15).
Symptoms: Sudden red oil pressure warning lamp, 'switch off engine immediately', often followed by engine damage
The BRT is an interference engine: timing belt failure means inevitable engine damage. Belt, tensioner and water pump must be replaced by 120,000 km at the latest.
Symptoms: No warning symptom before belt failure. Engine stops turning, will not start, engine damage
Vehicle Weaknesses 5
Recall for defective pressure control valve venting on the 1.9 TDI (2003–2004). Additionally: undersized fuel pump bolts (2002–2005).
The front axle of the Alhambra 7M suffers from the high vehicle weight. Joints, sway bar links, bearings, and springs wear at an above-average rate.
The high kerb weight of the Alhambra 7M causes above-average wear on brake discs, pads, and brake lines.
AC compressor failures are a known issue on the Alhambra 7M. Condensate drain lines get damaged by stone chips. HVAC actuator motors also fail.
The Alhambra 7M regularly scores poorly in defect statistics. Front axle geometry, steering play, exhaust system, and brakes are typical inspection complaints.
