RAM 1500
The classic 5.7L Hemi with 395 hp โ same base engine as in the Jeep Grand Cherokee and Dodge Durango. MDS (Multi-Displacement System) deactivates 4 cylinders at part throttle: deactivated lifters receive no oil, needle bearing surfaces run dry on the cam lobes. Metal shavings contaminate the entire oil supply, camshaft destruction follows. Hemi Tick on cold start sounds minor โ it's not always. Exhaust manifold bolts snap from thermal cycling (aluminum head, steel bolts), TSB 09-001-24 issued January 2024. MDS Delete via ECU tuning is the only permanent solution.
Hemi 5.7 โ the sound that can cost you ,000
395 hp V8 with that unmistakable Hemi burble on startup. MDS cylinder deactivation is the sword of Damocles โ lifters fail from dry-running needle bearings. ,200-5,000 repair. Exhaust manifold bolts break universally (TSB 09-001-24). "Change oil every 5,000 miles with synthetic or pay the price" โ the RAM community sums it up.
Engine Weaknesses 4
MDS deactivates cylinders 1, 4, 6, 7 at part throttle โ deactivated lifters receive no oil, needle bearing surfaces run dry on the cam lobes. Metal shavings contaminate the entire oil supply, camshaft destruction follows. MDS Delete via ECU tuning ($300โ500) is the only permanent fix.
Symptoms: Loud ticking/knocking at operating temperature, misfires, rough running, oil pressure drop
Coolant pump fails from plastic impeller separation (plastic from steel shaft) or bearing wear. Coolant loss gradual or sudden.
Symptoms: Coolant loss, overheating warning, squealing from the engine bay
Metallic ticking from the valvetrain, especially on cold start. Can be harmless exhaust manifold tick or dangerous MDS lifter tick โ the difference matters enormously. Lifter tick that gets louder at operating temperature is a red flag.
Symptoms: Metallic ticking on cold start, disappears after warmup (harmless) or stays/gets louder (critical)
Steel bolts hold exhaust manifold to aluminum cylinder head โ different thermal expansion rates cause bolts to snap on every heat cycle, especially rear passenger side. TSB 09-001-24 (January 2024) addresses the problem on 2019โ2024 RAM 1500.
Symptoms: Metallic ticking on cold start, disappears after warmup, exhaust smell inside cabin
Vehicle Weaknesses 5
The TIPM is the central control module for the vehicle's electrical system. Moisture corrodes internal components โ result: intermittent failure of fuel pump, headlights, windshield washers, door locks. Replacement required, repair rarely permanent.
Metal straps holding the fuel tank corrode through in salt belt states โ tank can drop. Recall for 270,000 vehicles 2009โ2012 in 20 US states. Frame design without drainage holes promotes moisture accumulation.
Optional Active Level air suspension fails in cold climates from moisture entering air lines. Lines become brittle in freezing temps, air bags lose seal. Compressor failure over $1,000 repair, complete system failure over $3,000. Conversion to coil springs is the cost-effective permanent solution.
8-speed ZF automatic shudders when the torque converter lockup clutch engages between 15โ50 mph. Cause: degraded transmission fluid or clutch lining wear. RAM markets this transmission as 'Lifetime Fill' โ fluid changes not recommended by dealers, which accelerates the problem.
UConnect 8.4-inch display freezes, shows blue screen, or delaminates (layers separate). 2017โ2018 model years most affected: FCA switched manufacturers to cut costs. Early 2019 reverted to original supplier, issues significantly reduced.
