Porsche 4S Diesel
The 4.0L biturbo V8 in the Panamera Turbo S — maximum evolution at 630 hp. This is beyond anything expected of a GT saloon: 0–100 in 3.1 seconds, 306 km/h top speed, and still comfortable enough for long-distance use. The engine works without effort and is barely audible in normal driving. At full throttle it's a different personality. The best argument that comfort and performance need not be contradictions.
Panamera 4S Diesel — Torque Long-Hauler
The Panamera 4S Diesel with V8 TDI delivers 627 Nm of torque — more than the turbocharged petrol. AWD, PDK, air suspension — on the motorway a composed express with sensational range. The V8 diesel doesn't sound inspiring, but the pull from standstill compensates. For the long-distance commuter the most convincing engine choice in the Panamera.
Engine Weaknesses 7
4.0L V8 TDI Panamera 971: timing chain is at the rear of the engine block. Engine and gearbox removal required. €4,000–8,000.
Symptoms: Timing chain rattle on cold start, camshaft position fault code
4.0L V8 biturbo diesel Panamera 971: turbo bearing damage from 150,000 km. Replace both turbos at the same time.
Symptoms: Check engine light, power loss, whining turbo noise, blue smoke
V8 TDI Panamera 971 diesel: DPF blocks up with short-trip driving. Regular long runs keep the filter clear.
Symptoms: DPF warning light, power reduction, increased fuel consumption
The 4.0L V8 TDI with 422 hp shares the EGR carbon buildup problem of all modern diesel engines. Emissions updates increase the EGR flow rate, accelerating coking. Intake area cleaning every 100,000 km recommended.
Symptoms: Rough running and stumble, EGR fault code, engine power loss, increased particulate emissions, black smoke clouds on acceleration
4.0L V8 TDI Panamera 971: EGR valve carbons up with short-trip use. Cleaning or replacement at 100,000 km recommended.
Symptoms: Check engine light, P0400/P0401, limp mode, reduced power
The AdBlue dosing system (SCR) on the V8 TDI is failure-prone. Crystallised AdBlue blocks injectors and pumps. Sensor and heater failures in the AdBlue tank trigger DPF regeneration faults.
Symptoms: AdBlue warning light, DPF fault, check engine light, in extreme cases engine shutdown after kilometre warning
The oil filter housing gasket fails thermally just as on the petrol V8. On the diesel V8, oil often drips onto hot exhaust components, presenting an increased fire risk. Repair requires turbo removal.
Symptoms: Oil spots under the car, oil smell after spirited driving, dropping oil level, in worst case oil on hot exhaust pipe
Vehicle Weaknesses 8
On Turbo variants with high torque, the PDK clutch can wear prematurely with spirited driving. Clutch replacement required.
Roof drains block with leaves. Water enters the interior and can damage the high-voltage battery on E-Hybrid models. Cleaning every 2 years is essential.
Improved over the 970, but air suspension compressor and valve block remain wear items. High repair costs with premium specification.
Leaves and debris collect at the bonnet hinge recesses and block the water channel in front of the windscreen. Water runs into the passenger footwell or boot. Regular cleaning required.
Radar and camera systems for driver assistance show false alerts in poor weather or with dirty sensors. Calibration required after windscreen replacement.
Door seals allow road noise in. Headliner detaches at the sides due to brittled clips.
The Panamera's high vehicle weight leads to rapid pad and brake disc wear especially at the front axle. Check the brakes regularly, particularly after motorway runs.
Many ECUs in the 971 generation can only be fully read and configured with the Porsche PIWIS diagnostic tool. Standard OBD2 tools fail with PDK mapping, air suspension and ADAS calibration.
