Porsche 4S
The 3.0L V6 diesel for the Panamera 970 facelift β technically revised over the CRCC, slightly more efficient. In the Panamera context a diesel is polarising today: practical and efficient on long distances, but the diesel scandal and uncertainty about driving bans are risks that come with the purchase. Ignore that and you find a solid long-distance companion.
Panamera 4S β all-wheel-drive sport GT
The 4S with biturbo V6 and all-wheel drive combines sport and composure: strong turbo thrust, secure all-wheel traction, PDK precision. Composed on wet motorways, surprisingly agile on twisty country roads. The weight distribution through the all-wheel drive is near-perfect. The most convincing Panamera configuration for demanding high-mileage drivers.
Engine Weaknesses 7
Chain tensioner loses tension at high mileage. Chain elongates, valve timing shifts. Regular oil changes reduce the risk.
Symptoms: Chain rattle on cold start, rough running, check engine light
V6 naturally aspirated Cayenne 92A is prone to oil consumption with short-trip use and extended oil change intervals. Porsche accepts up to 0.7 L/1,000 km as normal.
Symptoms: Oil level warning, blue smoke after auxiliary heater use, regular top-ups required
The brittle plastic Y-shaped coolant vent line fractures after thermal cycling. Risk is higher on the turbo because the engine bay runs hotter. Recommended to replace together with all plastic coolant lines.
Symptoms: Coolant loss with no visible external leak, coolant smell inside cabin, coolant level requires regular topping up
PDK pressure sensors and shift rod sensors in the dual-clutch gearbox can fail. Besides expensive dealer quotes (gearbox replacement), a sensor diagnosis at a specialist workshop is often significantly cheaper.
Symptoms: Gearbox fault warning, gear stuck, car won't start, gearbox does not respond to shift inputs
Pure direct injection leads to oil carbon deposits on intake valves. Power loss and rough running from 80,000 km.
Symptoms: Rough idle, slight power loss, poor cold-start response
On the turbocharged CWDA, a functioning oil-air separator is especially important, as boost pressure can otherwise penetrate the crankcase. Leaking hoses or failed diaphragms lead to oil mist in the charge air system.
Symptoms: Elevated oil consumption, white smoke under full load, oil film in intercooler, false air fault, power loss under boost
Ignition coils on the 3.0L V6 Turbo fail individually β turbo and moisture stress the insulation particularly hard. Porsche specialists recommend replacing all coils at once, as further failures follow quickly after the first.
Symptoms: P030X misfire fault code, rough running especially at idle, power loss, fuel smell from exhaust, flashing check engine light
Vehicle Weaknesses 8
Air bags and compressor are common wear items. Vehicle sags or sits unevenly. Repair is labour-intensive and expensive.
Power steering fails at high engine bay temperature or high speed. Safety-relevant β steering wheel barely movable.
Complex comfort electronics (seat adjustment, memory, climate control, parking sensors) are repair-intensive. ECUs and sensors fail with age.
Climate control regulates driver and passenger sides with extreme temperature differences. Heat exchanger sensor delivers an invalid value.
Roof drain channels block with leaves and direct water into the bodywork. Ingressing water can reach the hybrid battery compartment (on E-Hybrid models) or ECUs in the boot β costly secondary damage possible.
High vehicle weight (1,800-2,000 kg) puts heavy demands on the brakes. Brake discs and pads need replacing more often than on lighter sports models.
Exhaust system and underbody fixings are prone to corrosion, especially with winter use. Seized bolts make service work considerably harder and can lead to cracks in the exhaust system.
Door seals lose their firm seating after a few years, and the headliner fabric begins to detach. Known issue on multiple Panamera 970s: allows wind noise and potential moisture ingress.
