Fun Factor? Fun to Drive!

992 C4 Cabrio — open all-weather 911

Driving the 992 C4 open at 15°C with light rain — that's the configuration this car was built for. All-wheel drive gives security in the wet, PDK shifts seamlessly, the boxer biturbo delivers power from standstill. The 992's hood is the best ever: quick, quiet, watertight. An all-year-round convertible.

Engine Weaknesses 6

!! Water pump manufacturing defect — early failure

Early 992 production batches (late 2019, early 2020) had faulty water pumps. Porsche supplied revised pumps as warranty replacements.

Symptoms: Coolant temperature rise, coolant warning light, coolant loss without external leakage on very early vehicles

0–2,000 $ from 5,000 km
!! PADM engine mount water ingress

On early 992 models (2019–2020) the active powertrain damper mounts (PADM) were not sufficiently sealed at the factory. Water enters the mount internals and destroys the sensor.

Symptoms: PADM fault warning on the dashboard, increased vibration in the cabin, system disables dynamic mount control

1,400–3,500 $ from 15,000 km
!! Ignition coil failure under heat load

9A2 engine ignition coils fail from long-term heat exposure — particularly cylinders 1 and 4 due to their proximity to the exhaust. Replace all six coils together.

Symptoms: Engine stumble, start-stop deactivated, engine control fault, misfire (OBD: P0301–P0306)

300–800 $ from 60,000 km
!! Injector defect — misfires under load

Individual injectors leave the factory faulty — documented in a Porsche TSB. Repair is carried out by replacing the affected injector individually.

Symptoms: Engine stumble under medium load, engine reduction warning, occasional power dip at full throttle

500–2,000 $ from 20,000 km
! Fuel tank vent valve failure (EVAP)

The 992 fuel tank vent valve can fail early and triggers a check engine light with an EVAP leak code. Access requires considerable disassembly effort.

Symptoms: Check engine light (CEL), fuel system micro-leak fault code, occasional clicking at low rpm

500–1,500 $ from 20,000 km
! Intake valve carbon deposits (DFI)

Like all DI flat-six engines without port injection, the DKCA gradually builds up deposits on the intake valves. Preventive cleaning from around 80,000–100,000 km can be worthwhile.

Symptoms: Power loss, elevated fuel consumption, occasional rough running — only noticeable at higher mileages

600–1,400 $ from 90,000 km

Vehicle Weaknesses 9

!! Other Recall — Hazard Light Software

Software fault on 8,666 vehicles: the hazard lights do not activate reliably during emergency braking. Free software update at the dealer.

0–0 $
!! Body Water Ingress from Poorly Bonded Windscreen

Early build years 2019/2020: windscreen not correctly bonded, water enters the footwell. Repaired under warranty.

0–500 $ from 5,000 km
!! Body Targa Mechanism Locks Up in Cold and Wet Weather

The complex Targa mechanism locks up in wet or cold weather. The rear lid opens, the latches release, but the roof does not travel back. Workshop lubrication usually fixes it permanently.

0–800 $ from 10,000 km
! Electronics PCM 5.0 Freezes or Restarts

The PCM 5.0 infotainment system freezes on the Porsche logo or restarts spontaneously. Driver profiles are also not correctly restored after restart. Often fixable via software.

0–500 $ from 15,000 km
! Suspension PADM Engine Mount Sensor Faulty

The active engine mounts (PADM, Sport Chrono) lose their damping function due to sensor failure. In 98% of cases only the internal sensor is faulty — full mount replacement is not needed.

220–2,800 $ from 40,000 km
! Interior Interior Rattles — Door Cards and Storage Areas

Door cards, dashboard area and parcel shelf creak and rattle over bumps. Several owners report build quality inadequate for the price segment.

0–300 $ from 20,000 km
! Body Soft-Top Fabric Roughens Along Fold Lines

The thermally sealed fold lines roughen up relatively quickly. Never stow a wet roof, and re-treat regularly with protectant. The issue is known from the 991 generation and has not been fully resolved.

2,500–5,500 $ from 50,000 km
i Steering Steering Creak — Rack Cover

Known noise source: the steering rack cover contacts the steering linkage and produces a creaking sound. Porsche has issued an official service bulletin for this.

0–200 $ from 20,000 km
i Body Wind Noise with Roof Closed at Motorway Speeds

Wind noise can occur around the seals at high speeds. Readjustment and silicone treatment help. Significantly quieter than the predecessor, but not at coupé level.
