Peugeot Rifter

DV5 1.5L BlueHDi 102 hp Manual Front-wheel drive 2018–2026 Custom Search
✖ Stay Away!
Engine DV5 ✖ Stay Away! 9,790–28,330 $

Successor to the DV6. More modern common rail diesel with SCR cat and AdBlue. Economical and torquey. Cleaner than its predecessor.

Fun Factor? Decent

Utility before fun

102 hp in the Rifter is practical. The high-roof estate needs torque, not sportiness. Does the job.

Engine Weaknesses 6

!! Premature timing chain wear — subject to recall 2017–2023

The only 7 mm wide timing chain stretches prematurely and can snap. Oil dilution from short-trip use accelerates the problem. Stellantis has initiated a mega recall covering 141,700 vehicles in Germany.

Symptoms: Rattling or clattering on cold start, engine management light, rough engine running, in the worst case sudden engine shutdown from chain snap while driving

1,650–4,400 $ from 80,000 km
!! High-pressure pump seizes 2017–2021

The Bosch high-pressure pump on the DV5 can seize, particularly on vehicles with fewer than 50,000 km. Metal swarf enters the fuel system and requires replacement of the entire injection system.

Symptoms: Engine no longer starts or stalls while driving, engine management light, metallic noise from engine bay, power loss shortly before total failure

2,200–5,500 $ from 40,000 km
!! Timing chain recall — warranty extension 2017–2023

Stellantis has extended the warranty to 10 years / 240,000 km (since July 2025). A software update increases oil pressure and a special oil change is performed. Chain replacement free of charge if required.

Symptoms: Affected vehicles receive a recall notification. Workshop performs diagnosis, checks chain stretch via camshaft/crankshaft sensor comparison.

!! Plastic water pump impeller destroys timing chain

The plastic impeller on the water pump breaks away and damages the timing chain. Engine damage at 180,000 km documented; earlier production series (pre-December 2019) with 6 mm chain are more susceptible. Complete engine replacement required: approx. 10,000 €.

Symptoms: Timing chain rattle, rattling noise resembling a failed dual mass flywheel, sudden power loss

3,300–11,000 $ from 160,000 km
!! AdBlue system fails from crystal formation

The AdBlue pump inside the tank can block from urea crystallisation, particularly in cold weather. In the worst case the vehicle can no longer be started. Often the entire AdBlue tank must be replaced.

Symptoms: AdBlue warning on display, countdown to start lock, engine will not start after allowance kilometres expire, SCR system fault message

550–1,650 $ from 80,000 km
!! AdBlue tank cracks in frost below -11.5 °C

AdBlue freezes below -11.5 °C. Extended parking in an unheated garage (below -15 °C) can crack the tank. Repair costs over 600–1,000 €. Stellantis has been offering goodwill coverage for this damage since February 2023.

Symptoms: Exhaust treatment warning after frost, visible AdBlue tank crack, SCR system warning light

660–1,320 $

Vehicle Weaknesses 6

!! Other Recall: handbrake does not latch 2018–2019

On Rifter models produced between November 2017 and December 2018 the handbrake lever may not latch fully. There is a risk of unintended rolling.

!! Other DPF clogging during short-trip use

The DPF on the 1.5 BlueHDi clogs during predominantly short-trip use because exhaust temperatures for self-regeneration are never reached. Expensive cleaning or replacement required.

330–1,650 $ from 80,000 km
!! Gearbox Dual-mass flywheel wear (diesel)

The dual-mass flywheel on diesel models wears at higher mileages and is typically replaced together with the clutch. City use and frequent short trips accelerate wear.

880–1,650 $ from 150,000 km
! Electronics Infotainment: Android Auto / software glitches

The MirrorLink/Android Auto system on the Rifter drops connections sporadically; range and fuel gauge readings can be inaccurate. Start-stop system occasionally fails.

0–330 $
! Other Sliding doors: squeaking and binding

The sliding doors on the Rifter are prone to squeaking and creaking as well as occasional binding. Lubricating the guide rails often helps, but the issue tends to recur.

60–330 $ from 50,000 km
! Brakes Brake discs: premature wear

The brake discs on the Rifter wear faster than on compact-class cars due to the vehicle's higher weight and frequent city use. Regular inspection recommended.

170–500 $ from 60,000 km
