Peugeot 5008
Updated THP with 165 hp and improved timing chain. Significantly more reliable than predecessor EP6DT.
Large SUV on a turbo budget
In the 5008 P87 as a seven-seater 165 hp is acceptable but not overwhelming. Fully loaded with luggage the limits become apparent; for normal daily use the engine is perfectly adequate. A workable alternative for families who do not want a diesel.
Engine Weaknesses 6
The EP6CDTX has a reinforced chain and revised tensioner (white guide rails instead of brown). Nevertheless, chain stretch occurs from around 100,000 km — less frequently than on EP6DT/DTS, but still relevant.
Symptoms: Slight rattle on cold start until oil pressure builds, valve timing fault in OBD, rough idle after warm restart
The EP6CDTX also uses direct injection exclusively. Oil mist and EGR gases cause stubborn carbon deposits on the intake valves. Cleaning every 60,000–80,000 km is recommended.
Symptoms: Gradual power loss, increased fuel consumption, hesitation at low revs, occasional misfires
The high-pressure pump of the EP6CDTX gradually loses its internal hydraulic oil over time. It wears faster with frequent short-trip use and in hot climates. Fault code P0087 is typical.
Symptoms: Power loss under load, engine stumbling at high revs, starting problems, MIL with fuel pressure fault
The electric water pump with integrated thermostat is the same design as the EP6DT/DTS and remains a wear item. A leak or pump failure creates overheating risk.
Symptoms: Coolant temperature rises, coolant loss without visible external leak, overheating warning, heater goes cold
THP165/200 high-pressure pumps lose oil pressure through worn seals. Intermittent power drops at 1,800–3,500 rpm; fuel pressure drops below 40 bar. Always replace the seal kit during repair.
Symptoms: Sporadic power drops under acceleration, unburnt fuel smell, engine warning light
The solenoid valve for variable cam timing fails on THP engines, causing power loss and fault codes. More common on pre-2014 models.
Symptoms: Rough idle, engine warning light, power loss at mid-range revs
Vehicle Weaknesses 10
Due to a faulty weld the tow hitch can come loose and cause trailer separation. Affects build years up to 2020. Free rectification at the dealer.
On diesel models (01/2017–01/2022) the particulate filter can develop cracks through overheating during regeneration. Frequent short-trip use makes the problem worse as the filter cannot fully regenerate.
The electric tailgate fails to respond or only responds sporadically. Two typical failure phases: around 15,000 km due to software faults and at 80,000–100,000 km due to mechanical wear of the gas struts.
The rear calipers have low-quality pistons that corrode and seize quickly. Discs show deep scoring and heat discolouration as early as 13,000–50,000 km. Peugeot attributes the issue to driving style.
The lower connection of the AC condenser does not seal permanently. After a seal replacement the leak frequently recurs. Many variants (12 mm / 16 mm) are available; an incorrect order delays the repair. Workshop cost around 900 euros.
The start-stop system develops problems after just 20,000–40,000 km. The function stops working completely or behaves erratically when pulling away from traffic lights.
On models from 2019 onwards the head-up display gets stuck in the housing or only partially deploys after 30,000–50,000 km. The drive mechanism jams.
Rear coil springs produce thumping noises when the suspension compresses, described as a blow with a rubber mallet. Sometimes occurs from as little as 300 km (assembly or production defect). Difficult to reproduce.
The seat heater on the 5008 P87 typically fails due to a defective heating mat, switch fault or broken wire. Peugeot integrates the heating mats fully into the PU foam, making replacement expensive.
The electric tailgate fails in two typical waves: around 15,000 km due to software errors and between 80,000–100,000 km due to mechanical wear of the gas struts. The drive unit is expensive.
