Peugeot 308
More powerful electric motor on the e-CMP platform for the 308 class. 54 kWh battery, up to 400 km range.
Electric compact with punch
The E-308 with 157 kW makes a statement: 213 hp in a compact hatchback, instant torque and silky smooth power delivery. The 308 was already dynamic as a combustion car; as an EV it goes a step further. 400 km of range make it viable for longer trips too.
Engine Weaknesses 6
Faulty BMS software configuration causes sudden drive loss while driving. Recall MDY for 2022 model year vehicles (e-208, e-2008, e-Partner, e-Rifter).
Symptoms: Electric motor cuts out while driving, car coasts only, no prior warning
The STLA Medium heat pump in the e-308/e-3008 157 kW shares the well-known e-CMP weakness: moisture ingress through an undersized moisture trap. On early build years compressor corrosion is possible. Newer VMAX OBC reduces risk; the heat pump compressor remains a risk component.
Symptoms: Heating output drops in winter, 'electric drivetrain fault' or A/C error, refrigerant compressor noise
The fitted Mahle CAOBC1 on-board charger tends to fail, making AC charging via wallbox impossible. Costly repair 2,500–3,500 €; Stellantis sometimes offers goodwill (75% coverage outside warranty).
Symptoms: Charging aborts immediately at wallbox, charging system fault, only DC fast-charging still works
The early OBC (Mahle) in the e-308 is fault-prone and can fail completely. Stellantis introduced VMAX New Energy as a significantly more robust replacement OBC. Repair takes up to 6 weeks as the OBC must be programmed to the vehicle VIN.
Symptoms: AC charging aborts or won't start, error 'OBC temperature', only emergency charging at reduced power possible, message 'check charging system'
As with other Stellantis EVs a faulty standby controller drains the 12V battery. When connected to the wallbox the car stays 'awake' and continuously draws current. A Peugeot software update is required.
Symptoms: Car can't be opened after standing, 12V battery fully drained, all systems dead, charging session not started
The high-voltage battery loses a disproportionate amount of capacity in the first 30,000 km (SOH 93–95%). Fast charging above 80% and frequent DC charging accelerate the process. BMS calibration can distort the displayed reading.
Symptoms: Range drops faster than expected; SOH display shows below 95% after 2 years; noticeably less range in winter
Vehicle Weaknesses 10
On the 308 P51 the cockpit screens and central touchscreen can fail completely. The 3D i-Cockpit occasionally drops out and shows no information. Software lockups occur particularly with Apple CarPlay connections.
On the 308 P51 with 2.0-litre diesel engine the particulate filter can overheat and develop cracks. This leads to elevated exhaust emissions and potential fire risk. Stellantis has initiated a recall.
On certain 308 models the seatbelt anchorages can fracture. Over 27,000 vehicles in Germany alone were affected by this recall. In the event of an accident the belt can no longer restrain the occupant.
Repeatedly failing windscreen wiper motors are reported on the 308 P51. In some cases the motor had to be replaced twice within half a year, indicating a systematic problem.
AC condenser loses refrigerant through stone chip damage or connection leaks. Even after recharging the refrigerant escapes again within months. Evaporator replacement requires a complete dashboard strip-out.
P51 owners report sporadic EPS warning messages and complete display blackouts. Software updates often only solve the problem temporarily. More frequent on early 2022 models.
Uneven tyre wear is reported on the 308 P51, particularly on the outer edges. All-season tyres sometimes needed replacing after just 25,000 km.
On the 308 the earth connection in the black connector of the heater resistor burns through in around 95% of cases. Peugeot has issued a Technical Service Bulletin (TSB). Cheap repair, but a frequent one.
Front strut top mounts wear and produce squeaking or creaking when steering. Known PSA platform issue. Genuine parts last considerably longer than aftermarket alternatives.
The steering wheel's synthetic leather is not resistant to hand cream and perspiration. After 3–5 years it peels or flakes off. A well-known Peugeot problem since the 306/307. Goodwill claim at the dealer may be possible.
