Opel Zafira
Robust naturally aspirated Ecotec four-cylinder with timing belt drive. The map-controlled thermostat is a known weak point across the entire Z1xXER family. Ignition coils and oil pressure switch are inexpensive service parts that should be replaced preventively.
Zafira B base
77 kW in the Zafira B – tight for the family van.
Engine Weaknesses 5
The Z16XER is an interference engine with timing belt drive. Replacement interval 10 years or 150,000 km. If the belt breaks without being replaced, the valve train strikes the pistons — total engine failure.
Symptoms: No direct warning before failure. Indirect sign: belt rattling or squealing. Sudden engine failure with valve damage as a result.
The electronically controlled thermostat fails frequently, remaining permanently in the open or closed position. Only OEM parts provide reliable replacement.
Symptoms: Engine temperature permanently too low (around 73 °C instead of 91–96 °C), heater barely produces warmth, increased fuel consumption, fault code P2182.
The oil pressure switch is prone to leaking. Escaped oil can migrate along the wiring loom to the engine ECU and damage it.
Symptoms: Oil spots in engine bay below the oil pressure switch, oil pressure warning light, in the worst case ECU failure from oil contact at the connector.
Ignition coils fail regularly and cause misfires. Replacement is straightforward and inexpensive but should be done promptly to protect the catalytic converter from damage.
Symptoms: Juddering when accelerating, misfires especially at higher revs, engine warning light, rough idle.
The membrane in the crankcase ventilation valve tears regularly and causes a false air leak. The result is increased oil consumption and rough running.
Symptoms: Whistling or hissing from engine bay, rough idle, fluctuating revs, increased oil consumption, engine can stall on cold start.
Vehicle Weaknesses 14
Heated screen wash nozzles can overheat and ignite the vehicle. Opel recalled affected Zafira B models from build years 2004–2006. Repair was free of charge at the dealer.
Fault code C0131 indicates a typical ABS control unit defect on the Zafira B. The ECU can fail due to moisture or voltage spikes and must be replaced at considerable effort.
On diesel models up to build year 2005 water, dirt and salt collect in an insulation material on the front subframe causing severe internal rust. Total rust makes the vehicle beyond repair.
On the Zafira B steel brake lines at the rear axle and along the underbody are particularly susceptible to corrosion. Moisture collects in the contact area with insulation mats.
The hydraulic power steering pump frequently fails from 100,000 km. Additionally CIM module defects lead to intermittent steering failure. Typical problem of the GM Epsilon platform.
The Column Integration Module coordinates horn, steering angle sensor, immobiliser and steering wheel remote control. Contact problems lead to serial errors on the CAN bus.
The electric Quickheat supplementary heater of the Zafira B fails due to capacitor defects or ECU failure. Primarily affects older high-mileage models.
The immobiliser transponder in the key or the reader coil at the ignition switch of the Zafira B can fail and block the vehicle permanently. Often occurs after several years.
The M32 manual gearbox in the Zafira B suffers from premature bearing wear on the 6th gear input shaft. Typical howling at motorway speed from approx. 150,000 km.
The MOSFET in the AC auto blower controller destroys itself and gets stuck at one blower speed. With non-OEM parts there is increased fire risk through overheating.
Quickly wearing suspension springs and shock absorbers as the main weak point. The multi-seat Flex7 concept puts particular stress on the rear axle.
On vehicles with panoramic roof the drain channels block with leaves and dirt. Water backs up in the frame and enters the interior through the headliner.
On the Zafira B the plastic expansion tanks develop hairline cracks. The gradual coolant loss can go unnoticed until the ABS control unit is damaged by escaping fluid.
The folded third-row seats in the Zafira B (Flex7) rustle and rattle while driving. Belt guides hang loose and knock against the trim.
