A13DTE 1.3L CDTI 95 hp Manual Front-wheel drive Hatchback 2014–2018 Custom Search
– Be Careful
Engine A13DTE – Be Careful 4,410–17,690 $

Successor to the Z13DTH with slightly higher output (95 hp), structurally closely related to the Fiat MultiJet. The timing chain was not fundamentally improved and remains the biggest concern. DPF makes the engine particularly sensitive to short-trip use.

Fun Factor? Decent

Efficient diesel

The proven 1.3 CDTI gets the job done reliably. 70 kW acceptable for longer trips.

Engine Weaknesses 5

!! Timing chain: stretch and rattle

Like its predecessor Z13DTH, the timing chain stretches with contaminated oil and extended change intervals. Cold-start rattle is the first warning sign; chain jump or breakage causes immediate engine failure.

Symptoms: Metallic rattling from the timing chain area on cold start for 2–5 seconds, fading at operating temperature. Power loss, increased consumption.

660–2,200 $ from 150,000 km
!! Turbocharger: bearing failure from oil starvation

The turbocharger suffers bearing wear when oil supply is compromised by dirty oil or extended intervals. A non-return valve (55563097) for approx. €50 can prevent oil leaking into the intake.

Symptoms: Whistling or squealing noise on load changes, oil spots at the rear, oil mist in intake, power loss, blue smoke from exhaust.

440–1,650 $ from 130,000 km
!! DPF clogging on short-trip use

The DPF clogs on frequent short trips as full regeneration cannot occur. Fault code P160D. New OEM DPF costs up to €2,000; cleaning approx. 25% of that.

Symptoms: Power loss, increased fuel consumption, black smoke clouds on acceleration, limp mode, engine management light.

440–2,200 $ from 100,000 km
!! Oil cooler gasket leak

The gasket between oil cooler and engine block deteriorates over time, causing significant oil loss below the oil filter housing. Oil drips onto the A/C compressor unit and contaminates the underbody shield.

Symptoms: Oil seepage below oil filter housing, oil puddles under the vehicle, dropping oil level, oil pressure warning light in advanced cases, fault code P0520.

220–550 $ from 150,000 km
! EGR valve: carbon build-up

The EGR valve carbons up especially on short trips and causes poor starting and power loss. Replacement or cleaning totals approx. €200–400.

Symptoms: Hesitation from cold, misfires, engine management light, sporadic throttle response, rough idle.

170–550 $ from 90,000 km

Vehicle Weaknesses 13

!! Other Recall: steering intermediate shaft breaks 2014–2014

Steering intermediate shafts on certain vehicles (build year 2014, VIN E6071016–E6118738) not manufactured to specification. Shaft breakage under load is possible.

0–0 $
!! Steering Power steering fails in cold weather

The EPS system fails sporadically at temperatures below around 6 °C. Steering and ESC both deactivate simultaneously. Possible cause: body control module or steering module.

330–1,320 $ from 60,000 km
!! Other 1.3 CDTI turbo and injector damage

The 1.3 CDTI (Fiat base engine) in the Corsa E shows turbo damage and leaking injectors as with its predecessor. Short-trip driving accelerates DPF clogging and injector carbon build-up.

550–2,750 $ from 100,000 km
!! HVAC A/C compressor failure

The A/C compressor fails, often with long parts lead times (up to 4 months). Total cost including refrigerant and labour can reach 1,000–1,800 €.

610–1,980 $ from 80,000 km
!! Other Clutch slave cylinder leaking 2017–2019

The internal clutch slave cylinder of the Corsa E (especially 2017–2019) leaks and loses gearbox oil. Replacement requires complete gearbox removal.

330–880 $ from 60,000 km
!! HVAC A/C condenser leaking from stone chip damage

The Corsa E A/C condenser is vulnerable to stone chip damage and leaks refrigerant as a result. Age-related corrosion leaks are also common. Replacement is labour-intensive.

170–660 $ from 80,000 km
! Electronics IntelliLink 4.0 crashes and errors

The IntelliLink R 4.0 crashes frequently, reboots or is unresponsive to touch. Software fault or defective hardware. Soft reset or disconnecting the battery often helps temporarily.

0–660 $ from 40,000 km
! Brakes Rear brake calipers seized

Rear brake calipers seize through corrosion, especially with infrequent use of the rear brakes in city driving. Pads wear unevenly.

170–550 $ from 70,000 km
! Suspension Front top mounts worn

The front top mounts wear out from around 80,000 km. When genuinely worn, noise and steering imprecision result.

110–330 $ from 90,000 km
! Interior Interior quality issues and rattles

The Corsa E suffers from below-average build quality: rattles from the dashboard and door cards are widespread. Material quality lags behind the competition.

0–110 $ from 50,000 km
! Rust Rust on sills and rear wheel arches

The sills and rear wheel arches of the Corsa E show rust from around 6 years. Cavities without adequate factory treatment are predisposed, especially in salt-belt regions.

170–880 $
! Cooling Coolant loss through defective expansion tank cap

The pressure cap on the coolant expansion tank no longer seals. Coolant escapes and system pressure can't build up. Can lead to overheating if unnoticed.

10–90 $ from 80,000 km
i Body Inner door handle chrome coating peeling off

The chrome coating on the inner door handles peels off. Opel only supplies the handle as part of the complete door card, making a cheap individual repair impossible.

60–330 $ from 80,000 km

Reports & Tests

TÜV AUTO BILD TÜV-Report 2024-11
Average

Faulty ignition coils and worn steering linkages are typical weak points. Timing chain issues mainly affect earlier build years. Multiple recalls for steering, engine failure, fire risk and side airbags. Low-beam headlights score below average across almost all age groups.
