Z13DTH 1.3L CDTI 70 hp Manual Front-wheel drive Hatchback 2003–2006 Custom Search
– Be Careful
Engine Z13DTH – Be Careful 2,930–10,470 $

90 hp variant of the small Fiat MultiJet diesel. The timing chain declared maintenance-free by the manufacturer is the biggest weakness and can catastrophically break above 150,000 km. EGR and turbo wastegate are further typical wear items.

Fun Factor? Decent

Economical companion

With 66 kW and good torque diesel driving in the Corsa C becomes acceptable. Solid for long commutes.

Engine Weaknesses 4

!! Timing chain: stretch and chain failure

The timing chain, declared maintenance-free, stretches considerably with long oil change intervals. A broken chain means engine damage from valve collision. Total failure documented at 184,000 km.

Symptoms: Rattling on cold start from the timing chain area, easing slightly as it warms up. Sudden engine failure with heavy smoke in total failure cases.

660–2,200 $ from 170,000 km
!! Turbo wastegate: seizing and pressure loss

The wastegate actuator on the IHI turbo seizes in the closed position through heat and ageing, leading to excessive boost pressure and limp mode. Turbo overhaul costs approx. 310 EUR.

Symptoms: Vehicle enters limp mode, severely reduced power, engine warning light, occasional whistling or grinding noises from turbo area.

330–1,320 $ from 120,000 km
!! Swirl flaps: sooting and blockage

The swirl flaps in the intake manifold coke up from EGR residues and crankcase ventilation. Complete intake manifold with swirl flaps costs approx. 520 EUR plus 250 EUR fitting.

Symptoms: Juddering and power loss especially on cold running, engine warning light with fault code P2279, poor throttle response in part-load range.

440–990 $ from 120,000 km
! EGR valve: sooting and failure

The EGR valve carbons up especially on short trips. Failures documented at 81,000–160,000 km. The valve can be cleaned or replaced; replacement part costs approx. 105 EUR.

Symptoms: Hesitation and juddering when cold, intermittent throttle response at part load, engine warning light, power drop.

170–550 $ from 100,000 km

Vehicle Weaknesses 13

!! Steering Electro-hydraulic power steering defective

The electro-hydraulic power steering of the Corsa C often fails — identifiable by a heavy steering wheel and illuminated steering warning light. The cause is usually the steering angle sensor or a faulty control unit.

280–880 $ from 100,000 km
!! Suspension Front axle: control arms and tie rods worn

From around 130,000 km, control arms, tie rod ends and anti-roll bar links on the Corsa C front axle wear out. Often several suspension components need to be replaced at the same time.

170–550 $ from 135,000 km
!! Electronics BCM control unit defective due to moisture

The Body Control Module (BCM) of the Corsa C is susceptible to moisture ingress. The BCM controls central locking, electric windows, automatic lights and indicators — a faulty module disables all these systems simultaneously.

170–660 $ from 100,000 km
!! Steering Electro-hydraulic power steering failure

The electro-hydraulic power steering of the Corsa C is a known weak point. Pump failure or electronic failure makes the steering wheel heavy. A new pump costs 200–400 €.

220–550 $ from 100,000 km
!! Rust Rust on filler neck and underbody

The fuel tank filler neck and underbody structure of the Corsa C are prone to heavy rust. Despite partially galvanised bodywork, the floor pan and rear axle area are vulnerable.

60–440 $ from 100,000 km
!! Other EGR valve coked up (diesel)

The 1.3 CDTI and 1.7 DTI engines of the Corsa C suffer from soot deposits in the EGR system. The EGR valve sticks and causes power loss and rough idle.

90–330 $ from 90,000 km
!! Body Water ingress into footwell through BCM housing

The BCM housing (black box in the engine bay next to the windscreen wiper) no longer seals properly. Rainwater runs into the driver's footwell and can damage control units.

30–170 $ from 80,000 km
! Rust Exhaust system rusted through

The Corsa C exhaust reliably rusts through from the inside — especially in short-trip drivers since condensation doesn't evaporate. The rear silencer and middle connecting pipes are first to go.

70–440 $ from 130,000 km
! Rust Rust at fuel filler neck and underbody

Dirt and moisture collect under the rubber sleeve at the fuel filler neck — a known weak point of the Corsa C. Without regular maintenance the filler neck area rusts heavily. The underbody is also prone to rust damage on winter vehicles.

110–660 $ from 120,000 km
! Other Central locking defective

Door locks and central locking of the Corsa C are failure-prone. The driver's door often stays shut and can only be opened manually, while the rest of the car responds to the remote.

30–220 $ from 80,000 km
! Brakes Rear brake drums seize

The rear brake drums of the Corsa C tend to seize with rust in damp conditions and after standing. Brake shoes stick to the drums, typically from 60,000 km. Loud cracking noise when pulling away.

90–280 $ from 70,000 km
! HVAC Blower resistor defective — only speed 4 works

The blower motor pre-resistor burns out. Result: the fan only runs on speed 4 (full blast), lower speeds no longer work. Known Opel issue across several models.

30–130 $ from 90,000 km
i Interior Rattling door cards and vent louvers

Door cards and dashboard of the Corsa C tend to rattle. Clips come loose, vent louver blades wobble, door locks make noise over bumps.

0–110 $ from 80,000 km
