Engine A16FDL ✖ Stay Away! 10,570–27,120 $

GM-Fiat joint engine with proven basic design, but a known timing chain problem. The tensioner rattles at half-warm starts. Revised tensioner available.

Fun Factor? Decent

Combo D petrol top

77 kW in the Combo D – adequately powered for everyday use.

Engine Weaknesses 8

!! Timing chain rattles, tensioner fails

The chain tensioner is notoriously weak and rattles especially with a semi-warm engine (40–80 °C). Chain wear accelerates. Revised tensioner available; repair costs €1,500–3,500.

Symptoms: Metallic rattling on cold start and with semi-warm engine, sounds like a loose chain. Disappears at operating temperature

880–3,850 $ from 80,000 km
!! Turbocharger wear from oil starvation

With neglected oil changes or oil contaminated by timing chain issues, the turbocharger wears prematurely. Replacement €800–2,000 depending on variant.

Symptoms: Whistling noise on acceleration, blue smoke from exhaust, visible oil consumption

880–2,200 $ from 150,000 km
!! Oil pump chain snapped — engine failure

On the A16FDL the oil pump chain snaps due to low oil pressure. Plastic guide rails break off and jam the oil pump chain. Result: catastrophic engine failure. Repair €2,000–4,000; Opel modified tensioners from model year 2017.

Symptoms: Red oil pressure warning light, rattling from the lower engine area, engine stops abruptly, cannot be restarted.

2,200–4,400 $ from 80,000 km
!! Timing chain stretching — gearbox removal required

The timing chain of the A16FDL is a primary weak point. Repair requires gearbox removal. Wear often from 60,000 km. Typical repair cost €2,000–3,500.

Symptoms: Rattling on cold start (3–5 sec) that eases at operating temperature; in advanced stages continuous chain noise.

1,980–3,850 $ from 80,000 km
!! Particulate filter clogged (short trips)

With frequent city driving the DPF does not regenerate fully and clogs. Cleaning €350–500, replacement up to €1,500. Occasional motorway drives extend service life.

Symptoms: Engine warning light, power loss, limp-home mode, increased fuel consumption

390–1,650 $ from 100,000 km
!! Timing chain tensioner worn — cold-start rattle

Early Astra K models (2015–2016) had a timing chain tensioner that wore too quickly and rattled loudly on cold start. Opel switched to an improved tensioner from early 2017. Repair costs: €1,200–2,000, 13 hours labour.

Symptoms: Loud clattering immediately after cold start, reduces as engine warms, continuous when heavily worn.

1,320–2,200 $ from 63,000 km
!! DPF clogging on short trips

The A16FDL DPF only regenerates reliably above approx. 60 km/h sustained. On short trips and city driving it clogs far earlier than usual. Once clogged: forced motorway drive or expensive workshop cleaning/replacement.

Symptoms: DPF warning light, engine power reduction (limp mode), increased fuel consumption, engine oil diluted by fuel.

1,100–2,750 $ from 80,000 km
!! Intake manifold clogged with carbon

The A16FDL intake system carbons up significantly after approx. 60,000 km, causing power loss. Workshop cleaning costs €300–500; without intervention the loss grows continuously.

Symptoms: Gradual power loss, increased fuel consumption, rough idle, smoke on acceleration.

330–660 $ from 70,000 km

Vehicle Weaknesses 12

!! Other Handbrake releases on its own 2012–2013

Recall: The ratchet on the handbrake lever pawl is incorrectly aligned; the lever releases spontaneously.

0–330 $
!! Suspension Front strut top mounts wear early

Fiat Doblo platform: Top mounts fail frequently, sometimes after just 20,000–40,000 km. Commercial use exacerbates the problem.

110–390 $ from 30,000 km
!! Steering Top mount worn — spring breakage

Worn top mounts cause the springs to twist during steering movements, leading to spring breakage. On commercially used vehicles already from 60,000 km.

390–770 $ from 70,000 km
! Suspension Rear shock absorbers wear prematurely

On commercially used vehicles with frequent full loads, a common wear item from 70,000–90,000 km.

170–440 $ from 80,000 km
! Rust Exhaust system rusts through early

The exhaust system rusts through from around 70,000 km. The centre box and rear silencer are particularly susceptible.

170–550 $ from 70,000 km
! Electronics Blue&Me infotainment faults

Permanently flashing trip meter display, failed Bluetooth connection, or complete system crash.

0–330 $ from 60,000 km
! Gearbox Manual gearbox stiff on shifts

The 5-speed gearbox suffers from synchromesh problems with commercial use. Gearbox oil leaks through worn shaft seals.

110–880 $ from 120,000 km
! Body Window regulator failure

Window regulator motors and plastic cable pulleys wear out; windows do not close fully.

90–330 $ from 100,000 km
! Brakes Front brake discs wear abnormally early

Front brake discs and pads need replacing as early as 20,000–45,000 km. Cooling problems at the brake back plate promote overheating.

200–500 $ from 35,000 km
! HVAC Heater/AC blower motor failure

The blower motor fails or only works on individual speeds. Worn carbon brushes or faulty resistors. Typical issue on the Fiat Doblo platform.

110–390 $ from 90,000 km
! Cooling Thermostat stuck open — engine does not reach operating temperature

The thermostat sticks in the open position, coolant circulates permanently. Engine does not reach operating temperature, increased fuel consumption.

110–330 $ from 80,000 km
i Interior Seat upholstery and sliding door plastic wear early

Seat upholstery, door handles, and controls wear noticeably faster with intensive use. The sliding door plastic guard becomes brittle.

60–330 $ from 60,000 km
