Opel Combo
GM-Fiat joint engine with proven basic design, but a known timing chain problem. The tensioner rattles at half-warm starts. Revised tensioner available.
Combo D petrol base
66 kW in the Combo D – base petrol engine for the compact MPV.
Engine Weaknesses 8
The chain tensioner is notoriously weak and rattles especially with a semi-warm engine (40–80 °C). Chain wear accelerates. Revised tensioner available; repair costs €1,500–3,500.
Symptoms: Metallic rattling on cold start and with semi-warm engine, sounds like a loose chain. Disappears at operating temperature
With neglected oil changes or oil contaminated by timing chain issues, the turbocharger wears prematurely. Replacement €800–2,000 depending on variant.
Symptoms: Whistling noise on acceleration, blue smoke from exhaust, visible oil consumption
On the A16FDL the oil pump chain snaps due to low oil pressure. Plastic guide rails break off and jam the oil pump chain. Result: catastrophic engine failure. Repair €2,000–4,000; Opel modified tensioners from model year 2017.
Symptoms: Red oil pressure warning light, rattling from the lower engine area, engine stops abruptly, cannot be restarted.
The timing chain of the A16FDL is a primary weak point. Repair requires gearbox removal. Wear often from 60,000 km. Typical repair cost €2,000–3,500.
Symptoms: Rattling on cold start (3–5 sec) that eases at operating temperature; in advanced stages continuous chain noise.
With frequent city driving the DPF does not regenerate fully and clogs. Cleaning €350–500, replacement up to €1,500. Occasional motorway drives extend service life.
Symptoms: Engine warning light, power loss, limp-home mode, increased fuel consumption
Early Astra K models (2015–2016) had a timing chain tensioner that wore too quickly and rattled loudly on cold start. Opel switched to an improved tensioner from early 2017. Repair costs: €1,200–2,000, 13 hours labour.
Symptoms: Loud clattering immediately after cold start, reduces as engine warms, continuous when heavily worn.
The A16FDL DPF only regenerates reliably above approx. 60 km/h sustained. On short trips and city driving it clogs far earlier than usual. Once clogged: forced motorway drive or expensive workshop cleaning/replacement.
Symptoms: DPF warning light, engine power reduction (limp mode), increased fuel consumption, engine oil diluted by fuel.
The A16FDL intake system carbons up significantly after approx. 60,000 km, causing power loss. Workshop cleaning costs €300–500; without intervention the loss grows continuously.
Symptoms: Gradual power loss, increased fuel consumption, rough idle, smoke on acceleration.
Vehicle Weaknesses 12
Recall: The ratchet on the handbrake lever pawl is incorrectly aligned; the lever releases spontaneously.
Fiat Doblo platform: Top mounts fail frequently, sometimes after just 20,000–40,000 km. Commercial use exacerbates the problem.
Worn top mounts cause the springs to twist during steering movements, leading to spring breakage. On commercially used vehicles already from 60,000 km.
On commercially used vehicles with frequent full loads, a common wear item from 70,000–90,000 km.
The exhaust system rusts through from around 70,000 km. The centre box and rear silencer are particularly susceptible.
Permanently flashing trip meter display, failed Bluetooth connection, or complete system crash.
The 5-speed gearbox suffers from synchromesh problems with commercial use. Gearbox oil leaks through worn shaft seals.
Window regulator motors and plastic cable pulleys wear out; windows do not close fully.
Front brake discs and pads need replacing as early as 20,000–45,000 km. Cooling problems at the brake back plate promote overheating.
The blower motor fails or only works on individual speeds. Worn carbon brushes or faulty resistors. Typical issue on the Fiat Doblo platform.
The thermostat sticks in the open position, coolant circulates permanently. Engine does not reach operating temperature, increased fuel consumption.
Seat upholstery, door handles, and controls wear noticeably faster with intensive use. The sliding door plastic guard becomes brittle.
