Opel Astra
Three-cylinder turbopetrol (1.0 L, 90–115 hp) from the GM Family 0. Timing chain is the central weakness with neglected oil changes. Turbocharger is robust but sensitive to cold-load operation.
Three-cylinder turbo
77 kW turbo three-cylinder – surprisingly agile in the Astra K, a good compromise.
Engine Weaknesses 4
Timing chain stretches prematurely with long oil change intervals. Guide rails wear, chain tensioner gives way. In extreme cases, engine damage results.
Symptoms: Metallic rattling after cold start, in advanced stages audible when warm too.
Rare but documented: head gasket fails, one cylinder burns out. Repair costs up to 9,000 € with consequential damage.
Symptoms: Engine runs rough, coolant level drops, yellow warning light, possible total engine failure.
The turbocharger suffers when the engine is switched off frequently without a cool-down period after full-load use. Oil carbon deposits cause bearing wear.
Symptoms: Whistling noise, blue smoke, power loss under boost, elevated oil consumption.
Design-inherent vibrations at idle and low RPM. Not a defect, but noticeable with weak engine mounts.
Symptoms: Vibrations at the steering wheel and gear lever when stationary, rattling at idle, especially when cold.
Vehicle Weaknesses 14
The clutch slave cylinder seal dissolves and contaminates the hydraulic system. Affects diesel manual gearbox models 2016–2018. Recall number 181803130.
The M32 6-speed manual gearbox shows stiff gear engagement especially cold, particularly 2nd and 3rd gears. Air in the clutch hydraulics or a faulty clutch slave cylinder are the common causes.
Water from the wheel arch runs onto the plastic mounting bracket of the engine carrier and promotes corrosion from the inside out. Rust warranty applies for 12 years with a complete service history.
Rear coil springs can break prematurely due to corrosion at the spring seat, sometimes as early as 38,000 km. Rust grips the spring root. Grounds for MOT failure.
LED headlights on the Astra K fail sporadically due to loose connectors and faulty control units. Mainly affects early production years 2015–2017.
The Astra K shows chronic oil loss at various gaskets according to ADAC and MOT reports. Visible oil residue on the underbody leads to rejection at the MOT.
Squealing noises from the EPS steering at high temperatures are a known Astra K issue. In severe cases the steering assist cuts out. Cause: steering rack wear or electrical connections.
The display on the Navi 900 IntelliLink flickers, stays black, or shows colour errors. Hardware defect at the display panel. Replacement costs around €160 (used) to €1,250 (new).
The first HMI module in the Astra K (pre-2016 recall) freezes or becomes unresponsive. Sporadic audio dropouts can still occur even after updates.
The infotainment system on the Astra K regularly freezes or crashes. Navigation and Apple CarPlay stop responding. Often fixable by a software update, but the problem returns.
The rear brake discs on the Astra K corrode noticeably faster than the fronts according to MOT reports. With standing time or low brake usage they rust up and must be replaced prematurely.
On the Astra K the fresh air channel drain becomes blocked by leaves and debris. Water then runs into the cabin (driver's footwell or rear left).
The blend door actuator in the Astra K fails. Temperature can then no longer be regulated — regardless of the dial position, only cold or only hot air comes out.
The A-pillar trim on the Astra K detaches or warps and rattles while driving. Also crackling noises from the passenger door.
Reports & Tests
Oil loss remains the dominant problem. On the Astra K, infotainment failures, juddering 1.4 turbo engines and fogged driver assistance camera lenses are additional issues. Recalls affected defective airbag inflators and brake master cylinders.
