– Be Careful
Engine Z13DTH – Be Careful 3,770–11,610 $

90 hp variant of the small Fiat MultiJet diesel. The timing chain declared maintenance-free by the manufacturer is the biggest weakness and can catastrophically break above 150,000 km. EGR and turbo wastegate are further typical wear items.

Fun Factor? Not Really

Economy as the goal

For those who care more about consumption than driving pleasure – as an estate acceptable for exactly that purpose.

Engine Weaknesses 4

!! Timing chain: stretch and chain failure

The timing chain, declared maintenance-free, stretches considerably with long oil change intervals. A broken chain means engine damage from valve collision. Total failure documented at 184,000 km.

Symptoms: Rattling on cold start from the timing chain area, easing slightly as it warms up. Sudden engine failure with heavy smoke in total failure cases.

660–2,200 $ from 170,000 km
!! Turbo wastegate: seizing and pressure loss

The wastegate actuator on the IHI turbo seizes in the closed position through heat and ageing, leading to excessive boost pressure and limp mode. Turbo overhaul costs approx. 310 EUR.

Symptoms: Vehicle enters limp mode, severely reduced power, engine warning light, occasional whistling or grinding noises from turbo area.

330–1,320 $ from 120,000 km
!! Swirl flaps: sooting and blockage

The swirl flaps in the intake manifold coke up from EGR residues and crankcase ventilation. Complete intake manifold with swirl flaps costs approx. 520 EUR plus 250 EUR fitting.

Symptoms: Juddering and power loss especially on cold running, engine warning light with fault code P2279, poor throttle response in part-load range.

440–990 $ from 120,000 km
! EGR valve: sooting and failure

The EGR valve carbons up especially on short trips. Failures documented at 81,000–160,000 km. The valve can be cleaned or replaced; replacement part costs approx. 105 EUR.

Symptoms: Hesitation and juddering when cold, intermittent throttle response at part load, engine warning light, power drop.

170–550 $ from 100,000 km

Vehicle Weaknesses 10

!! Gearbox M32 gearbox bearing failure

The M32 6-speed manual gearbox has undersized bearings in the gearbox casing. The bearings cannot cope with the factory tolerances long-term, resulting in whining in 5th/6th gear and gear lever vibration on load changes.

770–1,650 $ from 100,000 km
!! HVAC AC condenser stone damage

The AC condenser sits low in the front end and is heavily exposed to stone damage. Damaged fins lead to refrigerant loss.

390–1,100 $ from 120,000 km
!! Brakes Rear brake discs corrode

The rear brake discs on the Astra H are prone to heavy surface corrosion, especially on vehicles that see little use. Discs often need replacing due to rust rather than wear.

170–440 $ from 80,000 km
!! Cooling Oil cooler gasket leaking (1.8)

On the Astra H 1.8 petrol engine the oil cooler gaskets fail, creating an oily, sludgy residue in the coolant expansion tank. If ignored, the cooling circuit becomes contaminated.

170–440 $ from 100,000 km
!! Steering Electric power steering fails intermittently

The electrohydraulic power steering on the Astra H fails intermittently or permanently. Cause: earth fault at the A-pillar to the CIM control unit, or faulty power steering pump. Steering becomes heavy.

330–1,320 $ from 120,000 km
! Rust Rust under tailgate chrome trim

Moisture penetrates through the chrome strip at the tailgate lower edge. The sealing is inadequate, leading to zinc bloom and rust under the paint.

220–880 $ from 100,000 km
! Suspension Drop link wear — front axle

The front axle anti-roll bar drop links wear comparatively quickly on the Astra H. Worn drop links cause dull knocking when cornering or over bumps.

90–280 $ from 80,000 km
! Body Boot water ingress through tailgate edge seal

Water enters the Astra H estate's boot through porous tailgate seals or leaking roof rail seam sealant. Moisture damage to the carpet and electronics is possible.

60–330 $ from 100,000 km
! Other Recall: CIM control unit — horn failure

Recall (Opel): A contact fault in the steering column module (CIM) causes the horn to fail on Astra H and Zafira B (2004–2010). Affects hundreds of thousands of vehicles.

i Interior Rattling noises in the dashboard

In the Astra H, plastic clips and trim around the interior mirror, instrument cluster, and centre console loosen. Creaking and rattling at certain RPM levels or road surfaces.

0–110 $ from 100,000 km
