Nissan X-Trail
First-generation 2.2L turbodiesel. Robust, but EGR and turbo are maintenance-intensive.
136 hp diesel — enough for everything except fun
Solid travel companion, but no corner hunter.
Engine Weaknesses 3
The YD22ETi turbocharger is known to develop bearing wear at high mileage or with irregular oil changes. Hot shutdowns without a cool-down period accelerate wear.
Symptoms: Whistling noise from turbocharger, power loss at high load, blue smoke from exhaust, oil in intake tract
The YD22ETi injection pump is comparatively sensitive to fuel quality and deposits. Poor fuel quality or neglected fuel filters can lead to premature failure.
Symptoms: Harsh injection knock, poor cold starting, irregular engine running, power loss
The YD22ETi EGR valve blocks almost systematically at higher mileages, particularly with urban use. Regular cleaning delays wear. When completely failed the engine enters limp mode.
Symptoms: Power loss, limp mode, stumble under load, increased fuel consumption, black smoke, P0400 series fault codes
