Nissan Titan · Pickup
V8 for work and for V8 people
305 hp from the 5.6L V8 through a five-speed auto — the A60 Titan is the unkillable truck with a proper soundtrack. Thirsty, heavy, honest. The pick for anyone who did not want a Hemi.
Engine Weaknesses 6
The transmission cooler lines run through the radiator on the Titan A60. When the radiator leaks, coolant mixes with transmission fluid. If caught late, full transmission replacement is unavoidable. Early detection with radiator replacement plus transmission flush saves thousands.
Symptoms: Foamy or pudding-like coolant, low coolant level despite frequent refilling, transmission slipping or jerking, discolored transmission fluid
The VK56DE timing chain guides wear from around 140,000 km. Ground-off plastic pieces end up in the oil pan. Consequence: chain rattle, disturbed cam timing, and in severe cases the chain jumps a tooth. High labor cost due to engine-out work.
Symptoms: Squealing or rattling from front of engine on startup, check engine light, power loss, cam timing error codes
The VK56DE V8 has four catalytic converters that can all fail over time. Low fuel pressure from a weak fuel pump accelerates converter damage significantly. Short-trip driving and localized overheating shorten converter life.
Symptoms: Check engine light P0420 or P0430, power loss, sulfur smell from exhaust, failed emissions test
The Titan A60 rear differential is missing a vent tube from the factory. Pressure buildup causes axle seals to fail prematurely and differential fluid to leak out. Repeated seal replacement is the only solution.
Symptoms: Oil puddle under the rear of the vehicle, differential fluid visible on axle housings, dropping differential fluid level
The VK56DE exhaust manifolds crack from thermal fatigue at high mileage. Documented especially on 2004–2012 Titan and Armada. The crack causes exhaust gas leaks and an audible tick — most prominent on a cold engine. Aftermarket headers or OEM replacements are the only lasting fix.
Symptoms: Ticking or clicking from engine bay on cold start, exhaust smell in engine bay, exhaust note sounds like a leak
The VK56DE V8 ignition coil packs are prone to failure, especially at higher mileages. Misfires and rough running result. Replacing a full set of coil packs is the most cost-effective solution.
Symptoms: Engine shaking and misfiring, check engine light P0300-P0308, power loss, increased fuel consumption
Vehicle Weaknesses 13
The Titan A60 transmission cooler lines run through the main radiator. When the radiator leaks, coolant mixes with transmission fluid. If not caught quickly, full transmission replacement is inevitable. Early diagnosis saves $2,000-3,000.
Early Titans suffer catastrophic rear diff failures due to axle venting and seal design flaws. E-locker variants especially prone.
Primary timing chain tensioner on VK56DE/VK56VD loses oil pressure at higher mileage and slaps on cold start.
Engine control module suffers from moisture intrusion and solder fractures. Failures cause intermittent no-starts and random trouble codes.
Bosch CP4 pump on Titan XD Diesel was spec'd for European fuel and wears on US diesel. Metal shavings destroy entire fuel system. Active class action.
DEF and diesel filler necks sit under same door and are easily confused. DEF in fuel tank destroys entire injection system.
The clock spring wiring harness (steering wheel contact unit) in the Titan A60 can wear and cause contact failures. This triggers airbag warning lights. A simple full-steering-wheel-rotation test usually diagnoses the issue.
The Titan A60 rear differential is missing a vent tube from the factory, causing pressure buildup and premature axle seal failure. Differential fluid leaks from the axle shafts. A factory defect from day one.
Design flaw in axle tube venting and wheel seals causes gear oil loss. TSB NTB10-32 specifies updated vent kit.
Well-known 2004-2007 issue. TSB 04104A documents pedal-height adjustment; if it returns, master cylinder is leaking internally.
Variable valve lift system is sensitive to dirty oil. Sludge blocks actuators and sensors, causing power loss.
Fuel sender on VK56DE coats and resistor strip wears. Common past 100,000 km / 60,000 mi.
The door handle surfaces, buttons, and control panels of the Titan A60 show heavy wear and fading at higher mileages. Frequently used controls are particularly affected.
