Nissan Qashqai
1.3L turbocharged direct injection, co-developed with Mercedes (A200/B180). Modern, but limited long-term data.
Renault turbo livens up the base
140 hp turbo petrol — nothing flashy, but the Qashqai drives smoothly and directly with it.
Engine Weaknesses 7
The HR13DDT turbocharger can fail prematurely from contamination or oil starvation. Part number A2820900280 is a well-known replacement type. Poor maintenance significantly increases the risk of bearing seizure.
Symptoms: Whistling or squealing under load, severe power drop, blue or black exhaust smoke
The CVT gearbox paired with the HR13DDT shows jerking and overheating tendency from 60,000–80,000 km. Regular oil changes every 50,000 km are essential as the gearbox is unforgiving of neglect.
Symptoms: Jerking on pull-away, rough acceleration behaviour, gearbox enters failsafe when hot
The timing chain of the HR13DDT stretches from around 90,000 km. Rattling on cold start is the first sign. A broken chain causes engine damage (interference engine). Expensive repair due to installation position.
Symptoms: Rattling on cold start, rough running, check engine light, power loss
As a direct injection engine the HR13DDT is prone to oil dilution from fuel ingress during frequent short-trip driving. This impairs lubrication and long-term increases wear on the timing chain and camshafts.
Symptoms: Fuel smell in engine oil, oil level slightly rising, slightly rough running after cold start
As a direct injection engine the HR13DDT does not clean intake valves with fuel. Oil mist from crankcase ventilation deposits as oil carbon, progressively impairing volumetric efficiency.
Symptoms: Rough idle, worse throttle response, slight power loss at high revs
The front cover gasket of the HR13DDT starts leaking from as early as around 25,000 km causing oil loss. Known production issue on early build years.
Symptoms: Oil marks at the front of the engine, oil loss, visible oil traces on the front cover
The HR13DDT ignition coils fail from around 30,000 km causing misfires. On a three-cylinder turbo a single coil failure is especially noticeable. Inexpensive repair.
Symptoms: Engine runs on two cylinders, heavy misfiring, check engine light, power loss
Vehicle Weaknesses 3
Control arms, tie rod ends and rubber bushes wear at higher mileages. MOT testers find these faults regularly. Suspension components should be carefully checked on vehicles over 100,000 km.
Headlights on the Qashqai J11 FL are frequently flagged at MOT. Dirty or yellowed lenses and incorrectly aimed beams are typical.
Rust sets in on suspension components and underbody fasteners, particularly on vehicles from salt-belt regions. The factory underbody protection is often insufficient for Central European winter conditions.
