Nissan Altima
Tech showcase with a service-bulletin asterisk
248 hp from the 2.0L VC-Turbo with variable compression — interesting on paper, overshadowed in real life by rod-bearing recalls. Once the campaign work is done, the engine delivers proper shove, but the CVT plus FWD layout stops it being any kind of sports sedan.
Engine Weaknesses 5
The KR20DDET VC-Turbo has known issues with main bearing damage and L-link mechanism failure in its variable compression system. NHTSA opened an investigation in 2023. A recall for approximately 450,000 vehicles was initiated in 2025. Metal debris in the oil pan is the diagnostic indicator.
Symptoms: Engine noise, sudden power loss, oil pressure warning light, metal debris in oil, engine fails to start
Nissan recalled approximately 450,000 vehicles equipped with the KR20DDET VC-Turbo engine due to potential bearing damage. Dealers inspect the oil pan for metal debris, reprogram the ECU, and replace the engine if necessary. Affected models: 2019-2020 Altima, 2019-2022 Infiniti QX50, 2022 Infiniti QX55.
Symptoms: Diagnosed in recall service without driver warning — dealer visit to check VIN recommended
The KR20DDET requires full synthetic 0W-20 oil and short change intervals (max 7,500 miles). Using cheap oil or extended intervals significantly accelerates bearing wear.
Symptoms: Noticeable oil consumption, dark or metallic-smelling oil, engine noise at operating temperature
The Garrett MGT2056Z turbocharger on the KR20DDET is fitted with an electronic wastegate actuator that is prone to rattle, sticking, and failure. A stuck-open wastegate causes boost pressure loss; a stuck-closed wastegate causes overboosting. Replacement is labor-intensive due to tight engine bay packaging.
Symptoms: Rattling or buzzing noise from engine bay at idle, loss of power under boost, turbo boost pressure fault codes, noticeable power drop above 3,000 rpm
The KR20DDET's multi-link variable compression system is extremely sensitive to oil quality and change intervals. Sludge from neglected 0W-20 oil blocks VVT solenoid passages, causing erratic cam timing, rough idle, and further accelerating the bearing wear that leads to the known L-link failures.
Symptoms: Rough idle or hesitation, cam timing fault codes P0011/P0021, oil pressure warning light, metallic knocking that appears or worsens at operating temperature
Vehicle Weaknesses 10
Despite the L33 class action settlements, the L34 Altima continues to have CVT issues. New complaints emerged from 2019. The fundamental Jatco CVT problem was not fully resolved. Regular CVT fluid changes remain essential.
Vehicles equipped with the I-FCW/AEB system brake suddenly without any apparent reason. Root cause is a faulty radar module detecting phantom objects. A TSB (NTB21-115B) for 2021-2022 models requires ECU reprogramming. Nissan has not issued an official recall.
NHTSA recall 25V437 covers 2019-2020 Altima with KR20DDET. Main and link bearings can fail leading to engine loss. Dealers inspect oil pan; engine replacement free if debris found.
The JF017E CVT in the 2.5L Altima shows shudder, whining and fail-safe mode between 50-80k miles. Valve body repair from $2000, full replacement up to $7000.
Forward Emergency Braking radar applies full brakes on empty roads. NHTSA logged 87 complaints in the first year. Class action filed, no recall yet.
Timing chain and tensioner on the 2.5L direct-injection PR25DD wear faster than expected, sometimes under 100k miles. Don't keep driving on a rattle.
The L34 AC compressors show similar failure patterns to predecessors. Under high load or wear, the compressor clutch fails. Always flush the condenser when replacing to prevent metal debris damage.
BCM/telematics modules draw too much current during sleep, killing starter battery during longer park times.
OEM acoustic windshield is notably crack-prone. CarComplaints logs 11 confirmed cases with an average failure mileage of only 4000 miles.
The 8-inch NissanConnect touchscreen triggers inputs on its own and shows delamination bubbles.
