Mitsubishi ASX

9HD 1.6L DI-D 114 hp Manual Front-wheel drive SUV 2015–2017
– Be Careful
Engine 9HD – Be Careful 2,950–11,630 €

PSA-Renault diesel engine (R9M/DV6) in the ASX facelift. Compact 1.6-litre diesel with 84 kW. Known DPF problems with short-trip use, EGR valve prone to fouling. Replace timing belt every 100,000 km.

Fun Factor? Decent

Renault diesel in the ASX

The 1.6 dCi from the Renault stable is frugal and refined. A good match for the ASX's sensible compact-SUV character.

Engine Weaknesses 4

!! DPF clogging (short-trip use)

The diesel particulate filter on the 9HD/R9M clogs with predominantly short-trip use. This engine is not suited to SUV operation in urban traffic. Regeneration requires at least 30 minutes of motorway driving.

Symptoms: DPF warning light, power loss, unusually high oil level (fuel dilution), smoke from exhaust

600–2,200 € from 100,000 km
!! Timing belt failure

The R9M/9HD uses a timing belt drive with a 100,000 km or 6-year replacement interval. Exceeding it risks engine damage. Replace water pump, tensioner, and idler rollers at the same time.

Symptoms: Engine cranks without firing, loud metallic noise, engine damage

400–1,500 € from 100,000 km
!! EGR valve fouling

The EGR valve on the R9M 1.6 DI-D cokes up with typical urban stop-and-go use. The ASX with frequent start-stop operation is particularly vulnerable. Cleaning costs 100–300 EUR, replacement 200–500 EUR.

Symptoms: Limp mode, power loss, check engine light, stumbling under acceleration

100–500 € from 90,000 km
!! Injector wear

The piezo injectors on the R9M/9HD can wear at high mileage (from 150,000 km) and with poor fuel quality. Repair is expensive; replacing all four injectors at once is recommended.

Symptoms: Engine stumbling, misfires, cold-start difficulties, increased fuel consumption

800–3,000 € from 150,000 km

Vehicle Weaknesses 6

!! Steering Worn steering ball joints at high age

From the third MOT onwards (approx. 7+ years) steering ball joints fail comparatively often and regularly result in inspection advisories. Replacement requires a specialist because wheel alignment work is necessary.

150–450 € from 120,000 km
!! Brakes Above-average brake defect rate on older examples

Older ASX models show an above-average defect rate for foot brake and handbrake at MOT inspections. Brake discs and pads wear unevenly; the parking brake is prone to corrosion in wet conditions.

200–600 € from 80,000 km
!! Rust Rust on tailgate and underbody

Particularly older examples (pre-2015) show rust formation on the tailgate as well as wheel arches, door sills, and underbody. Mitsubishi frequently covered tailgate repairs under goodwill. Underbody treatment in the first year is strongly recommended.

300–2,000 €
! Electronics Window regulators and central locking fault-prone

With age, window regulator motors and the central locking system fail due to corroded connectors, faulty relays, and broken wiring harnesses. Airbag warning lights can be triggered by contact issues in the steering wheel.

100–400 € from 100,000 km
! HVAC AC no longer cools adequately

Particularly on vehicles from 2010–2016, leaking AC condensers and compressor failures occur, causing loss of cooling performance. Leaks are often caused by stone chip damage to the front-mounted condenser.

300–900 € from 90,000 km
i Interior Rattling instrument cluster from loose trim rings

The chrome-trimmed rings around the gauge needles become loose over time and produce annoying rattling from the instrument cluster. The problem is widespread and well known but can be fixed cheaply with some skill.

0–80 € from 80,000 km
