MINI MINI Paceman
Identical design weakness as the N47C16: the rear-mounted timing chain stretches and can snap, causing total engine failure. Chain tensioner failure documented between 150,000 and 200,000 km; a preventive replacement of the timing chain assembly from 120,000 km is recommended. Keep oil at the prescribed level.
Paceman D — sport looks deceive
The Paceman with 82 kW diesel and automatic is a contradiction. The sporty design raises expectations the drivetrain cannot meet.
Engine Weaknesses 7
The N47C20 shares the notorious timing chain problem of the entire N47 engine family. The plasticisers in the guide rails degrade, and the chain and rails wear out. Faults before September 2013 also involve crankshaft sprocket geometry. Total cost for a timing chain replacement at a specialist starts from €1,790.
Symptoms: Rattling and scraping on cold start, check engine light, power drop, rough idle
The turbo on the N47C20 (Cooper SD) can be damaged by oil starvation, coke deposits, or improper shutdown. Hard driving followed immediately by switching the engine off is particularly critical. Early warning signs: metallic running noises.
Symptoms: Power loss, smoking, metallic noises under acceleration, oil loss at turbo
As with the N47C16, when the engine is opened for timing chain damage, simultaneous renewal of the rod and main bearings is recommended. Bearing service from 150,000 km is sensible, especially with irregular oil change history.
Symptoms: Dull knocking under acceleration, oil pressure warning light, metallic noises
The plastic swirl flaps in the intake manifold can break off and get ingested by the engine. This leads to severe engine damage. Preventive removal with blanking plugs is widespread.
Symptoms: Smoke and rough running on start-up, fault code 2C3200, limp mode
The glow plug control module of the N47C20 can fail just like on the N47C16. Faulty modules overheat functional glow plugs until their tips melt off.
Symptoms: Poor cold-start behaviour, harsh combustion, metallic noises when engine is damaged
The N47C20 (Cooper SD) also suffers from DPF clogging with short-trip use. The higher engine output does allow better active regeneration, but regular motorway runs are still recommended for DPF health.
Symptoms: DPF warning light, power loss, increased consumption, shorter regeneration intervals
The EGR valve of the N47C20 tends to carbon up from soot deposits just like the smaller N47C16. Cleaning every 80,000–100,000 km is recommended; replacement when wear is severe.
Symptoms: Hesitation at low rpm, power drop, smoking exhaust, fault codes
Vehicle Weaknesses 7
Incorrectly adjusted headlights are a typical weak point on the MINI Paceman according to MOT data. Alignment is frequently thrown off by vibrations and ageing.
Water enters through aged seals into the boot and footwell. On the Paceman the coupe-like roof and short roofline increase the risk at the rear seals.
Worn CV joints cause clicking noises when turning and accelerating. On the Paceman with ALL4 drivetrain the additional load increases wear.
Headlights mist up from the inside due to seal ageing. Moisture damage can lead to contact corrosion and bulb failure.
Electric window regulators fail with age. Noises when operating or complete failure are the symptoms. Replacement parts and fitting are moderately expensive.
After gearbox repairs the earth connection is frequently not re-tightened correctly, causing various electrical malfunctions. Check repair history at purchase.
The plastic interior trim is of mediocre quality and develops pronounced creaking and rattling noises. Barely suppressible in older examples.
