The MHEV B48 of the U-series builds on the improved F-series B48 and benefits from revised bearings, a more robust water pump and a reduced number of electronic modules. Known B48 issues such as oil consumption and valve carbon buildup are addressed by design, but should still be minimised with short oil change intervals. The 48V belt-starter-generator counts as a wear item.

Engine Weaknesses 7
The plastic timing chain guide can break. Plastic pieces travel to the oil pump and block the strainer, which can cause oil pressure loss and engine failure.
Symptoms: Clattering noise, oil pressure warning light, rattling on cold start. Fault codes 2A98, 287D, 2870.
The B48's plastic oil filter housing becomes brittle over time and can develop cracks. Oil or coolant loss at the housing, sometimes with mixing of both fluids.
Symptoms: Damp spots at the oil filter housing, dropping oil or coolant level, milky deposits in the expansion tank.
The oil scraper rings are designed narrow by default. Under high load or with insufficient oil quality, oil consumption rises progressively, up to compression loss.
Symptoms: Rising oil consumption over mileage, compression loss in individual cylinders, rough running.
The coolant vent line at the cylinder head can break on certain production batches. Slow coolant loss without visible puddle is the result.
Symptoms: Dropping coolant level, sweet smell after switching off, damp spots in the engine bay, temperature warning.
Design-inherent play in the wastegate lever causes rattling noises, especially on cold start and on throttle lift-off. BMW/MINI classifies light rattling as normal.
Symptoms: Rattling from the turbo area on cold start, clattering on throttle lift-off. Usually disappears once operating temperature is reached.
By design with direct injection: the intake valves are not cleaned by fuel and coke up over mileage. Walnut blasting is a preventive measure.
Symptoms: Rough idle, delayed throttle response, power loss, occasional misfires.
The crankcase ventilation can fail and lead to increased oil consumption. Oil mist then enters the intake uncontrolled.
Symptoms: Increased oil consumption (>0.5 l/1,000 km), blue smoke on cold start, oil at the air filter.
Vehicle Weaknesses 7
Signal faults in the Continental MK-C2 integrated braking system can, in very rare cases, lead to increased brake pedal resistance and failure of ABS and DSC. Free system replacement.
The new electric folding roof of the F65 has no long-term track record yet. Based on the predecessor (F57), seal and mechanical problems after several years cannot be ruled out.
The new infotainment system changes saved settings without user input. The problem is documented and is being resolved over time through software updates.
Owners report noticeably more hard plastic in visible areas and reduced convenience due to fewer physical controls. The perceived quality is below the predecessor F56.
Like the F66 hatch, early owners report reduced material quality in visible areas. Fewer physical controls than the predecessor.
The new infotainment system of the U-era shares software issues with the F66, including settings changing by themselves. Updates are applied via Remote Software Upgrade.
The standard seats offer only limited lateral support and no extendable thigh support. The short seat cushion is particularly felt as uncomfortable on longer journeys.
