The revised B38 of the U-series received a strengthened timing chain assembly, improved PCV system and optimised thermal management. The 48V mild-hybrid belt-starter takes over boost and recuperation functions, relieving the combustion engine; the belt-starter unit is an additional service item to factor in.

The B38's timing chain can stretch from around 80,000 km. Rattling on cold start is the first warning signal. Left untreated, chain jump and engine damage are likely.
Symptoms: Rattling noise on cold start that disappears after a few seconds. As it progresses: rough running, power loss, check engine light.
Early B38 engines (up to 04/2015) had an undersized half-shell thrust bearing that only causes problems with manual transmissions. BMW switched to 360-degree flanged bearings.
Symptoms: Vibrations that initially appear to come from the suspension. In extreme cases, catastrophic engine failure from bearing wear.
The three-cylinder's engine mounts wear significantly faster than expected in the MINI due to the transverse mounting and inherent vibrations. Failures documented from as low as 20,000 km.
Symptoms: Banging, creaking noises from the engine bay, engine visibly sitting crooked, increased vibrations at idle.
With insufficient lubrication or at high mileages, the turbocharger's oil seals can wear out. Blue exhaust smoke and increased oil consumption are the result.
Symptoms: Blue exhaust smoke, power loss, whistling noise from the turbo, increased oil consumption.
Plastic thermostat housing and electric water pump can fail from 80,000 km. Coolant loss without visible leak or overheating warning are typical.
Symptoms: Dropping coolant level, overheating warning, heater goes cold or fluctuates.
With direct injection, the intake valves are not washed by fuel. At higher mileages they coke up, leading to power loss and increased consumption.
Symptoms: Power loss, higher fuel consumption, rough idle.
The EGR valve clogs with soot deposits especially with predominantly short-trip use. Hesitation under part load and increased consumption are typical signs.

Vehicle Weaknesses 4
Signal faults in the Continental MK-C2 integrated braking system can, in very rare cases, lead to increased brake pedal resistance and failure of ABS and DSC. Free system replacement.
The new infotainment system changes saved settings without user input. The problem is documented and is being resolved over time through software updates.
Owners report noticeably more hard plastic in visible areas and reduced convenience due to fewer physical controls. The perceived quality is below the predecessor F56.
The standard seats offer only limited lateral support and no extendable thigh support. The short seat cushion is particularly felt as uncomfortable on longer journeys.
