Mercedes-Benz S 560

M176 4.0L V8 BiTurbo 469 hp Automatic Rear-wheel drive Convertible 2017โ€“2020
โ€“ Be Careful
Engine M176 โ€“ Be Careful 20,850โ€“76,800 $

4.0-litre V8 with two turbochargers in the cylinder valley โ€” the so-called hot-inside-V arrangement keeps the exhaust paths short and virtually eliminates turbo lag. The M176 is the civilian variant of the AMG V8: same basic architecture, different mapping, not a hand-built individual unit. Water-cooled charge air coolers in the cylinder valley reduce intake charge temperature from over 140ยฐC to near ambient. Cylinder deactivation silences four cylinders at part-load โ€” only perceptible as minimal steering wheel vibration. Maintenance note: do not push oil change intervals, as the oil separator in the crankcase breather reacts badly to old oil and, when blocked, pushes out the valve cover gasket โ€” extensive front-end disassembly required. Change spark plugs every 80,000 km, plan intake valve carbon cleaning after 70,000 km. When buying used, listen for wastegate rattle at part-load โ€” addressable via Xentry. Check camshaft adjuster solenoids for oil traces at the connector.

Fun Factor? Fun to Drive!

S-Class convertible with V8 โ€” the rarest and most sensual

The A217 S 560 Convertible combines one of the finest interiors in class with M176 V8 sound and no roof. Open, the engine sounds more present and musical than in any other S-Class body style. Enjoyable even in cooler temperatures with AIRSCARF neck heating โ€” and thanks to rear-wheel drive, a more direct feel than the 4MATIC coupรฉ.

Engine Weaknesses 9

!! Timing Chain Stretch โ€” M176 4.0L V8

The timing chains on the M176 V8 can stretch at high mileage. Due to the hot-inside-V design the repair is very complex as the turbochargers sit between the cylinder banks.

Symptoms: Chain rattling on cold start, camshaft fault codes, rough idle

4,000โ€“10,000 $ from 120,000 km
!! Camshaft Adjuster Solenoid Draws Oil into Wiring Harness

The camshaft adjuster solenoid on the M176 leaks and oil migrates by capillary action through the wiring harness to the ECU. A known Mercedes V8 issue since the M278.

Symptoms: Cold-start rattle for 1โ€“2 seconds, camshaft adjuster fault code, oil traces on connector, in extreme cases ECU failure

400โ€“2,500 $ from 80,000 km
!! Coolant Pump Leaking

The coolant pump on the M176 can develop a leak at the seal. Coolant loss leads to engine overheating if not addressed.

Symptoms: Coolant level drops, coolant puddle under the vehicle, temperature gauge rises

400โ€“1,200 $ from 80,000 km
!! Turbocharger Oil Return Lines Leaking

The oil return lines of both turbochargers in the hot-V become brittle and leak from heat exposure. Oil drips onto hot engine components.

Symptoms: Oil smell from engine bay, oil spots in V-area, dropping oil level, occasional smoke

600โ€“2,000 $ from 100,000 km
!! Ignition Coils Wear Prematurely โ€” Misfires

The individual ignition coils on the M176 BiTurbo V8 age faster due to the high thermal load in the turbocharged V. With 8 cylinders the costs add up quickly.

Symptoms: Rough idle, misfires on individual cylinders, check engine light, power loss especially in cold weather

200โ€“600 $ from 80,000 km
!! Oil Separator Clogs โ€” Valve Cover Gasket Pushed Out

The oil separator in the crankcase ventilation clogs over time and increases internal pressure, which forces the valve cover gasket to leak. Repair requires extensive disassembly of the front end.

Symptoms: Oil smell in engine bay, oil spots on valve cover and engine block, dropping oil level without visible leak in the hot-V area.

3,500โ€“8,000 $ from 70,000 km
!! Carbon Deposits on Intake Valves โ€” Typical GDI Issue

Pure direct injection without fuel rinsing of the intake valves allows oil mist from the crankcase ventilation to bake on and progressively narrow the intake ports.

Symptoms: Rough idle, noticeably reduced power at higher mileage, slightly elevated fuel consumption, occasional misfires.

500โ€“1,500 $ from 70,000 km
! Engine Mounts Worn โ€” Vibrations in Interior

The hydraulic engine mounts on the M176 are heavily stressed by the high torque (700 Nm). Hydraulic fluid leakage accelerates wear.

Symptoms: Vibrations at idle felt in the interior, clunking on throttle changes, increased noise at low rpm

400โ€“900 $ from 100,000 km
! Wastegate Rattle at Part Throttle โ€” Bush Play in Turbocharger

The wastegate flaps on both turbochargers rattle at part throttle as the guide bush has play when cold. No mechanical consequential damage โ€” Xentry coding provides a remedy.

Symptoms: Metallic rattling at constant part-throttle, especially pronounced when cold, disappears at full load and at idle.

0โ€“300 $ from 40,000 km

Vehicle Weaknesses 17

!! Suspension ABC/Magic Body Control hydraulics leaking

The active electro-hydraulic ABC suspension requires intensive maintenance. Hydraulic lines, valve blocks and pumps can develop leaks. Hydraulic oil change required every 50,000 km.

600โ€“4,000 $ from 120,000 km
!! Suspension AIRMATIC air suspension failure

Air bags and pressure hoses develop leaks. The compressor runs continuously and overheats. Repair: air bag pair 2,500โ€“3,500 โ‚ฌ, compressor 1,000โ€“1,300 โ‚ฌ.

1,000โ€“4,000 $ from 100,000 km
!! Body Soft-top headliner pull cables snap

The tension and pull cables of the soft-top headliner snap, preventing the roof from folding and closing correctly. Affects A217, A205 and A238 in the same way.

500โ€“2,700 $ from 60,000 km
!! Body Soft-top hydraulic cylinders leaking

Soft-top actuation hydraulic cylinders develop leaks through heat and seal ageing. Hydraulic oil drips onto seats or collects in the roof compartment.

800โ€“6,000 $ from 80,000 km
!! Suspension Airmatic/Magic Body Control air strut leaking

Air struts on Airmatic and Magic Body Control suspensions develop leaks. Vehicle drops, suspension warning light appears. Repair per corner is very costly.

1,200โ€“5,000 $ from 100,000 km
!! Suspension Magic Body Control valve block defective

The hydraulic Magic Body Control suspension is prone to valve block and hydraulic pump failures. Contamination in the oil causes system failures.

1,500โ€“8,000 $ from 120,000 km
!! Electronics COMAND display freezes or fails

The COMAND infotainment system freezes sporadically or fails completely. System faults increase from around 100,000 km.

800โ€“3,500 $ from 100,000 km
!! Electronics Driver assistance sensors defective

Radar and camera sensors for adaptive cruise control and emergency braking can cause malfunctions due to dirt or defects. Calibration after repair is expensive.

500โ€“2,500 $ from 80,000 km
!! Electronics COMAND display freezes / total failure

The COMAND navigation system shows read errors, freezes or fails to boot. A defective drive unit is the most common cause.

300โ€“1,500 $ from 100,000 km

Matrix LED headlights are not repairable -- individual modules cannot be replaced. Moisture and electronic failures require complete headlight replacement.

1,500โ€“4,500 $
! Electronics Window regulator control unit software fault

Window regulators fail or become unresponsive. Cause is often a software fault in the door control unit, fixable by update.

200โ€“800 $ from 80,000 km
! Brakes Elevated brake wear

Brake discs and pads wear quickly due to the high vehicle weight. Particularly during spirited driving.

600โ€“2,000 $ from 40,000 km
! Body Frameless doors: wind noise

Frameless door windows are inherently harder to seal. Worn seals or minimal window misalignment cause wind whistling from around 80 km/h.

200โ€“800 $ from 50,000 km
! Electronics Soft-Close / PSE pump defective

The pneumatic control unit operates soft-close, central locking and rear headrests via a shared pump. Leaks cause all functions to fail simultaneously.

400โ€“1,200 $ from 80,000 km
! Electronics Comand/NTG5 display failures

The Comand NTG5 infotainment system shows display failures, freezing and navigation start errors. Temperature-dependent malfunctions occur frequently.

150โ€“1,500 $
! Interior Seat heating / massage function defective

Seat heating mats and massage pneumatics in the multicontour seats are wear items. Heating mats fail internally, the PSE pump loses pressure for the massage function.

300โ€“1,200 $
! Body Door handle microswitch Keyless Go defective

The rubber seal of the Keyless Go microswitch in door handles becomes brittle through UV and temperature cycling. Moisture enters, the switch corrodes.

300โ€“600 $ from 70,000 km
