The brand-new W214 E-Class has been on sale since 2023 — Mercedes' most important model in its eighth generation. The design is more elegant than the angular W213 predecessor, and the technology is consistently electrified. All engines feature 48V mild-hybrid or plug-in drive.

The M254 2.0L turbo with ISG (Integrated Starter-Generator) comes in three power levels: 150 kW (E 200), 190 kW (E 300), and as plug-in E 300 e with 230 kW system output. The M254 succeeds the M264 and is noticeably more refined — less vibration, smoother running. The plug-in achieves over 60 miles pure electric (WLTP), realistically 45–50 miles.

The inline-six M256 3.0L at 280 kW in the E 450 is silky smooth with 48V support, making the old V6 a distant memory. Among diesels, the OM654 2.0L at 145 kW (E 220d) and as plug-in at 230 kW (E 300de) covers the base. The OM656 inline-six diesel at 2.9L and 270 kW in the E 450 d is the long-distance reference — an engine barely recognizable as a diesel.

Since the W214 is still very new, long-term data is limited. Known early issues: MBUX software glitches (updates fix most), occasional 48V system error messages, and the rear air suspension (standard on many trim levels) can occasionally make noises. The 9G-Tronic automatic shifts cleanly but can feel sluggish in city traffic.

Test-drive checklist: Test the MBUX system thoroughly — navigation, voice control, driver assists. Watch for 48V error messages on the instrument cluster. Check air suspension for noises over bumps. For plug-in: test charging speed and real-world range.

Modern inline-six diesel with aluminium block and steel pistons — technically the highest-quality diesel in the current Mercedes line-up. The vacuum-controlled coolant pump was subject to a recall (action code 2090008) due to fire risk from coolant entering the vacuum circuit. Piezo injectors sensitive to water-contaminated or low-quality diesel (CP4 fuel pump). Camtronic actuators require regular maintenance. DPF clogging on pure city use. Regular motorway driving recommended as maintenance.

Return to the inline-six after years of the M276 V6 — and the difference is immediately noticeable. Smoother, more even rev build-up, torque plateau from 1,600–4,000 rpm without any weakness. The 48V mild-hybrid system with integrated starter-generator (ISG) is not a marketing term: 16 kW of boost on pull-away fills turbo lag completely; measurable fuel saving in sail mode. When buying, check the 48V battery — failure costs 2,000–4,000 EUR, primarily affecting build years up to 2022. Electric coolant pumps can fail from 80,000 km. Change oil every 10,000 km, do not rely on Longlife — HPFP and camshaft adjusters are sensitive to old oil. Cold-start wastegate bushing rattle is by design and not a fault. Overall a very accomplished engine that holds 250,000 km without issues when maintained correctly.
