Smooth Everyday Transport

120 kW and DCT in the B-Class MPV: smooth and pleasant — the best a van can offer.

Engine Weaknesses 5

!! Increased oil consumption

Some M282 engines show early increased oil consumption from defective piston rings and oil scraper rings. The problem sometimes appears at low mileages.

Symptoms: Dropping oil level between service visits, occasionally slight blue smoke when accelerating

1,500–4,000 € from 60,000 km
!! Increased oil consumption from piston ring wear

Some M282 engines show progressive oil consumption from low mileage. Cause: defective oil rings or pistons. Direct injection washes oil off the cylinder wall.

Symptoms: Regular oil top-ups required, no visible leaks, no smoke from exhaust

2,000–5,000 € from 60,000 km
!! Boost pressure loss from turbo or charge air hose

The M282 turbocharger can lose power at higher mileage from bearing wear or leaking charge air pipes. The wastegate actuator can deliver incorrect signals.

Symptoms: Power drop at full throttle, whistling in the engine bay, boost pressure too low warning (P0299)

1,200–3,500 € from 120,000 km
! Thermostat problems

The M282 1.3T (co-developed with Renault) shows similar thermostat problems to the predecessor M270 family. A simple replacement often does not resolve the issue permanently.

Symptoms: Engine does not reach operating temperature reliably, temperature gauge fluctuates, increased fuel consumption

400–900 € from 80,000 km
! Intake valve carbon deposits

As a direct-injection engine without port injection, the M282 lacks the cleaning action of fuel on the intake valves. Carbon deposits can impair gas flow from around 60,000 km.

Symptoms: Rough idle, slight power loss, occasional misfires on cold start

300–700 € from 70,000 km

Vehicle Weaknesses 7

!! Other Recall: Gearbox Oil Underfilled — Fire Risk

On B-Class W247 with DCT gearbox (production Jan. 2018 – Mar. 2020) the gearbox may have been underfilled with oil. This can lead to drivetrain failure and increased fire risk.

!! Electronics Collision Warning Incorrectly Triggers Emergency Braking

On the B-Class W247, the collision warning system can incorrectly detect an obstacle and initiate full emergency braking even when no obstacle is present. Caused by incorrect radar sensor calibration.

0–500 € from 20,000 km
!! Suspension Springs, Dampers and Track Rod Ends Rejected at MOT

According to the TÜV report, on the W247 suspension components such as springs, shock absorbers and track rod ends are above-average causes for rejection at the main inspection.

300–1,500 € from 80,000 km
!! Suspension Springs, dampers and track rod ends

MOT reports cite springs, dampers and track rod ends as common weak points on the W247. The parking brake also causes repeated problems.

200–800 € from 60,000 km
! Interior Cockpit Vibrations and Boot Rattling

On the B-Class W247, vibrations in the cockpit at high revs are reported, frequently caused by a dirty cabin air filter. Boot lining also rattles.

20–300 € from 30,000 km
! Electronics MBUX Synchronisation Errors and Assistance System Failures

The MBUX system in the B-Class W247 shows sporadic synchronisation problems with Mercedes me as well as failures of the automatic high beam and traffic sign recognition.

0–600 € from 25,000 km
! Electronics Defective door locking modules

Electromechanical locking modules fail after 50,000-70,000 km due to moisture damage or microswitch wear.

100–400 € from 60,000 km
