Mercedes-Benz B 220 CDI

OM651DE22 2.1L Diesel 170 hp Automatic Front-wheel drive Van 2012–2014
✖ Stay Away!
Engine OM651DE22 ✖ Stay Away! 7,420–20,500 €

Widely used Mercedes diesel with aluminium block and steel liner. High mileages possible but known for injector seal issues, timing chain stretch and EGR problems.

Fun Factor? Not Really

Diesel Minimum

Only 125 kW Diesel in the compact. Economical yes, fun no.

Engine Weaknesses 6

!! Chain Tensioner Seal Leaking — Recall

Over 100,000 vehicles recalled: the chain tensioner seal leaks, allowing engine oil to drip onto the exhaust system and potentially ignite.

Symptoms: Dropping oil level, oil smell from engine bay, oily deposits under the vehicle, possible oil fire

0–300 €
!! Timing Chain Stretch (Simplex Chain)

The OM651 uses a simplex timing chain. With short-trip driving and overdue oil change intervals the chain stretches.

Symptoms: Light rattling noise on cold start from the rear of the engine, no fault code stored

1,200–3,000 € from 150,000 km
!! Piezo Injector Faults

Same Delphi piezo injector problems as in the DE18: 220 CDI and 250 CDI variants affected. Mercedes replaced them with solenoid injectors as part of a service action.

Symptoms: Vibrations and rough running especially under acceleration, elevated fuel consumption

1,500–3,500 € from 80,000 km
!! EGR Cooler Leaking — Coolant Loss

The EGR cooler of the OM651 develops hairline cracks at the connection stub and loses coolant. Green staining next to the fuel filter under the engine cover is typical.

Symptoms: Dropping coolant level without visible leak, intermittent coolant warning, green spots under the vehicle, heater output diminishing

270–900 € from 130,000 km
!! Dual-Mass Flywheel — Known Weak Point

The DMF on the OM651 suffers under the high torque output. Documented case: all 8mm rivets sheared at 149,000 km, with consequential damage to the clutch and crankshaft speed sensor.

Symptoms: Rattling and juddering at warm idle, vibrations when pulling away, shuddering at low RPM, noise increases with warm engine

1,200–2,200 € from 150,000 km
!! Turbocharger Leaks Oil — EKAS Actuator Destroyed

From around 150,000–180,000 km the OM651 turbocharger leaks oil through worn bearings, which drips onto the EKAS intake port deactivation actuator and destroys it. Double damage.

Symptoms: Black smoke under acceleration, oil residue in charge air hose, power loss, fault code P0299 boost pressure underrun

1,500–2,800 € from 165,000 km

Vehicle Weaknesses 7

!! Gearbox 7G-DCT Underfilled with Gearbox Oil from Factory, Fire Risk

Vehicles with 7G-DCT from the period January 2018 to March 2020 may have insufficient gearbox oil. Possible drivetrain failure and increased fire risk. Recall action carried out.

0–2,000 € from 30,000 km
!! Electronics PRE-SAFE Collision Warning Triggers Emergency Braking

Collision warning system incorrectly detects obstacles in urban traffic and initiates autonomous emergency braking. Software update resolves the problem. Rear light failures also known.

0–300 € from 30,000 km
!! Electronics ESP/ABS failure due to corroded connectors

Corroded connectors on the ECU cause failure of ESP, ABS and PRE-Safe. Safety systems are deactivated, vehicle goes into limp mode.

150–700 € from 100,000 km
!! Rust Rust on Door Lower Edges and Axle Springs

Door lower edges of the W246 rust, though less severely than the predecessor. Axle springs and components corrode and can break through oxidation. Rust susceptibility inappropriate for the price level.

200–1,000 € from 100,000 km
!! HVAC A/C Compressor and Condenser Prone to Failure

A/C condensers can develop leaks and lose refrigerant. A/C cooling diminishes after several years. Problem less frequent than on the predecessor W245 but still present.

400–1,200 € from 90,000 km
!! Gearbox 7G-DCT Clutch Wears Quickly in City Traffic

7G-DCT dual clutch gearbox shifts too hectically and causes increased clutch wear in stop-and-go traffic. Clutch replacement costs approximately €1,500. Shift behaviour criticised as rough.

800–2,000 € from 80,000 km
! Brakes Above-average brake disc wear

Brake discs and brake hoses wear above average on the W246. MOT reports flag this regularly. Brake lines on older examples are prone to corrosion.

200–600 € from 70,000 km
