Engine M178 – Be Careful 21,800–67,400 €

The M178 is AMG's sports car answer to Porsche — dry sump, hand-built, 4.0 litres with the turbos in the hot inner-V. The dry-sump system with a separate 12-litre oil reservoir is not just for show: under high lateral g-forces on the track the oil supply remains stable where a conventional engine would already suffer oil starvation. One Man, One Engine is not a marketing slogan — every engine has a plaque with the assembler's name, and that shows in build quality. Maintenance requirements are above average: intake valves carbon up through pure direct injection every 40,000–60,000 km; the hot-V turbo needs a few minutes of idle cool-down after track use. Shorten oil change intervals to 7,500 km — the manufacturer's recommendation is too long for spiritedly driven examples. Early production gearboxes up to 2017 were the weakest link: DCT replacement under 20,000 km occurred. Revised units run without issues. Replace ignition coils from 2018–2019 build years prophylactically if not already done.

Fun Factor? Legendary!

GT S: more edge, more chassis

The GT S sharpens the basic C190 recipe with 375 kW and a stiffer chassis tune. The steering delivers even more direct feedback, and the rear can be beautifully controlled on wet tarmac. For anyone who found the base GT too comfortable — the GT S feels noticeably more athletic without becoming uncomfortable.

Engine Weaknesses 8

!! DCT Gearbox Early Failure — First Generation

Early C190 models had DCT gearboxes that failed under 20,000 km — too much torque for the first gearbox generation. Mercedes replaced under warranty and revised the calibration.

Symptoms: Sudden neutral while driving, gearbox drops out, judder in the lower rev range.

4,000–12,000 € from 15,000 km
!! Turbocharger Wear Under Intensive Track Use

Hot-V turbochargers suffer from high heat on frequent track use. Improper shutdown after full load without cool-down accelerates bearing wear. Expensive to replace due to tight installation.

Symptoms: Whistling under load, smoke, power loss, elevated oil consumption.

3,000–8,000 € from 100,000 km
!! Ignition Coil Failure — Service Campaign 2018–2019

Known problem 2018–2019: ignition coils fail from moisture ingress. Mercedes responded with a service campaign and revised coils with rubber sealing.

Symptoms: Misfires on individual cylinders, rough running, check engine light, power loss.

300–900 € from 40,000 km
!! Intake Valve Carbon Buildup — Hot-V Direct Injection

Pure direct injection without port injectors causes heavy carbon buildup on intake valves. Hot-V layout with turbos in the inner V increases heat input. Walnut blasting every 40,000–60,000 km needed.

Symptoms: Rough idle, elevated fuel consumption, slight power loss, rough running on cold start.

800–2,500 € from 50,000 km
!! Timing Chain — Rattling on Cold Start

Timing chain and tensioners can show wear at high mileage. Typical rattling on cold start is the first warning sign. If ignored a chain jump with engine damage is possible.

Symptoms: Metallic rattling directly after cold start, disappears at operating temperature.

1,500–4,000 € from 120,000 km
!! High-Pressure Fuel Pump Failure

High-pressure pump can fail without warning. Pump must be completely replaced; repair is not possible. Affects all direct-injection AMG V8 engines of this generation.

Symptoms: Misfires, difficult cold starting, check engine light, rough running at low rpm.

800–2,000 € from 80,000 km
! Oil Leaks — Valve Covers and Oil Cooler

Valve cover gaskets, oil cooler gaskets and sump gasket tend to degrade at higher mileage. The dry-sump system has more sealing surfaces than conventional engines.

Symptoms: Oil spots under the vehicle, oil smell after driving, dropping oil level without visible consumption.

400–1,500 € from 80,000 km
! Recall: Catalytic Converter Heating ECU Software

Official recall 05/2014–12/2018: engine control unit software does not meet specification. After more than 67 hours standstill no catalytic converter heating on next start. Free software update.

Vehicle Weaknesses 6

!! Gearbox DCT gearbox early failure

The dual-clutch gearboxes on early C190 models (2015–2017) could not cope with the enormous torque and sometimes had to be replaced in under 20,000 km.

4,000–9,000 € from 18,000 km
!! Steering Power steering failure

Individual C190 units required the power steering pump to be replaced multiple times. The problem recurred after repair and eventually required a complete steering column replacement.

1,500–4,000 € from 40,000 km
!! Gearbox Premature Dual Clutch Gearbox Failure

Early C190 production vehicles showed gearbox failures sometimes before 20,000 km due to excessive torque. Synchroniser rings wear quickly; clunking when shifting from D to R is a typical symptom. Repair only possible at AMG.

3,000–12,000 € from 25,000 km
!! Electronics Instrument cluster complete failure

Complete instrument cluster failure has been documented, sometimes combined with extensive ECU replacement. Software issues after updates can damage additional control units.

1,500–6,000 €
! Interior Dashboard creaking

Prominent creaking and squeaking from the dashboard has been reported by several C190 owners. In severe cases a complete replacement was needed.

500–2,500 € from 30,000 km
! Interior Dashboard Creaking and Windscreen Wind Noise

Several C190 owners report severe creaking from the dashboard requiring complete dashboard replacement. Additionally, wind noise at the windscreen occurs at high speeds.

500–3,000 € from 30,000 km
