Mazda MX-30
Permanent magnet synchronous motor with a 35.5 kWh battery. Deliberately small battery for a low CO2 footprint, around 200 km range.
Stylish EV with Limited Range
The MX-30 is genuinely good fun on twisty country roads — direct handling, communicative steering and the immediate response of an EV. The roughly 200 km range limits practical use considerably. An interesting choice for city drivers with a taste for character.
Engine Weaknesses 3
DC fast charging aborts at certain stations, particularly at high ambient temperatures or when the battery is already above 60 % state of charge. Software updates improve compatibility.
Symptoms: Charging stops after a few minutes, 'charging not possible' error message, reduced charging power above 50 % SoC.
The 12 V auxiliary battery discharges during extended parking (>2 weeks) due to control units remaining in standby. Mazda recommends a trickle charger or regular power-on cycles.
Symptoms: Vehicle cannot be unlocked or started, 12 V battery warning, clock and settings reset after jump-start.
The already small 35.5 kWh battery loses up to 40 % range in winter. At -5 °C only 80–100 km is realistically achievable instead of the WLTP figure of 200 km.
Symptoms: Range indicator drops sharply in cold weather, heating reduces range by 30–40 %, more frequent charging required.
Vehicle Weaknesses 6
Known issue captured by recall AP015A: the 12 V auxiliary battery discharges if the vehicle sits unused for 4–7 days or longer. Multiple instances of the car being stranded for this reason within a single year have been documented.
Recall AP028A: faulty software in the on-board charger (OBC) causes it to detect the charging cable as connected when none is plugged in. This can prevent the vehicle from starting. Software update takes approximately 20 minutes at the dealer.
Heavy regenerative braking means the mechanical brakes are rarely used, leading to glazed pads and corroded discs. Rear brakes have been replaced at as little as 30,000 km, fronts at 44,000 km in some cases.
Very widespread problem: the driver's door side window is not adequately secured and rattles over bumps. Over 425 forum posts document the issue. Temporarily fixable by lowering and raising the window.
On early production vehicles the flocked coating on the upper door seals detaches, likely due to contamination during the pre-flocking production stage. Affects both driver and passenger sides.
The camera-based speed limit warning system on the MX-30 misreads signs and triggers unnecessary warnings. The alerts cannot be muted temporarily. Known software problem persisting across multiple software generations.
