Mazda CX-30
2.5-litre SkyActiv-G naturally aspirated engine with cylinder deactivation from 2018. Top of the naturally aspirated range with strong pull.
Sporty Crossover
Strong engine in the agile Mazda platform — the CX-30 drives almost like a raised Mazda 3. Direct steering and good grip make it entertaining.
Engine Weaknesses 6
Micro-cracks form on the exhaust side of the cylinder head due to thermal stress. Primarily affects 2019–2020 CX-5 and Mazda6. Mazda extended the warranty to 10 years/120,000 miles. Revised head design from 2021.
Symptoms: Sweet coolant smell after shutdown, dropping coolant level with no visible puddle, steam from engine bay
PCM software incorrectly controls hydraulic valve lash adjusters during the transition out of cylinder deactivation. Intake valve rocker arm can contact engine components. CX-5 KF 2017–2019, approx. 58,000 vehicles in Europe.
Symptoms: Misfires, power loss, rough running when upshifting out of cylinder deactivation
Recall for 2019–2020 CX-5: the low-pressure fuel pump impeller can fail due to cracking. Mazda notified owners in November 2021. Engine stall possible.
Symptoms: Engine won't start, power loss, irregular engine running, engine warning light
Direct injection without port injection — PCV oil vapour deposits on unswept intake valves. Higher thermal load from the turbo accelerates buildup. Walnut blasting from 100,000 km.
Symptoms: Rough idle, cold-start misfires, sluggish throttle response, slight power loss
Vehicle Weaknesses 6
Faulty ECU programming can cause sudden power loss or engine cut-out on the CX-30 (model year 2019). Several recall campaigns are known, including those relating to the emergency braking system and stop-start function.
On the CX-30, all four brake calipers including their carriers show heavy rust after around 30,000 km. Mazda does not officially acknowledge this as a defect. Surface rust also forms quickly on the rear brake discs.
Many CX-30 owners report sluggish or unreliable parking sensors. Early production batches from April 2019 to April 2020 suffered from false fault signals in the ultrasonic sensors. Mazda addressed this with a software update in March 2020.
Rust on door hinges was found on the Mazda CX-30 model year 2021. Further rust issues appear on the exhaust system and brake calipers, especially after winter operation with road salt.
A well-known problem on the Mazda CX-30 involves the rear door handles getting stuck after opening and not self-returning. The door then cannot be closed. Especially common in frost when ice forms behind the handle.
Several drivers report slight rear axle bounce on the CX-30 over road irregularities. According to specialists the cause is dampers that are tuned too softly. A comfort annoyance without any safety risk.
