Engine Weaknesses 7
The timing chain in the 2.2 MZR-CD stretches prematurely and produces rattling noises on cold starts. A known issue on GH models (2008–2015); resolved from the 2015 facelift. Engine damage in severe cases.
Symptoms: Rattling on cold start, engine warning light, irregular running; MMDS diagnostic value above 10.5 degrees indicates critical condition
Early SkyActiv-D units (2012–2013) had camshafts from a faulty batch with insufficient surface hardening. Metal is abraded and contaminates the oil with swarf.
Symptoms: Elevated vacuum pump pressure, metal particles in oil filter, engine noise; turbocharger can suffer secondary damage
The sequential bi-turbo can fail, often promoted by oil dilution from interrupted DPF regenerations or poor oil quality. A replacement turbo is significantly cheaper than a new unit.
Symptoms: Severe power loss, blue smoke from exhaust, whistling noise from turbo area, oil leaking from charger
The diesel particulate filter clogs during frequent short-trip driving because regeneration requires speeds above 2,000 rpm. Interrupted regeneration cycles also cause fuel dilution of the oil.
Symptoms: DPF warning light, elevated oil level, power loss, limp mode when fully blocked
The copper flame washers beneath the injectors can burn out and leak. Secondary damage to the cylinder head is possible. Repair is labour-intensive (approx. 10 work hours).
Symptoms: Ticking noise from the cylinder head area, combustion residue around injectors, power drop
Die Positions-Sensoren der Kurbel- und Nockenwelle des R2AA versagen durch Korrosion der Steckverbindungen oder Sensoreigendefekt. Fehlercode P1336 erscheint; in schweren Fällen stirbt der Motor während der Fahrt ab oder springt nicht mehr an.
Symptoms: Motorkontrollleuchte; unrunder Leerlauf; bei kaltem Start schlechtes Anspringen; im Extremfall: Motor stirbt während der Fahrt ab.
Die elektronische Drosselklappe (EAC-System) des MZR-CD 2.2 fällt durch Verkokung oder Gehäusedefekte aus. Das Motorsteuergerät begrenzt die Drehzahl auf ca. 2.000 U/min im Notlauf. Betrifft Mazda 3 BL, 5 CR/CW, 6 GH und CX-7 ER.
Symptoms: EAC-Warnleuchte blinkt; Motor begrenzt auf ca. 2.000 U/min; stark eingeschränkte Beschleunigung; Symptome treten oft nach Motorbremsphasen oder Kälte auf.
Vehicle Weaknesses 6
The Mazda 6 GH shows corrosion on door edges, sills and wheel arches. Less pronounced than on the GG, but vehicles without cavity wax treatment show clear rust onset after several years.
Seized rear brake calipers are a cross-generational Mazda 6 weakness. The integrated handbrake mechanism corrodes and can only be permanently resolved by replacement.
Control arm bushings and ball joints on the Mazda 6 GH front axle wear noticeably at higher mileage. MOT reports confirm above-average axle defects on the GH.
On the Mazda 6 GH with manual gearbox, especially the 2.2 diesel, 1st and 2nd gear are difficult to engage when cold. Synchro rings do not function correctly with the wrong gear oil.
Steering wheel judder when braking caused by warped brake discs is a well-known Mazda 6 weakness across all generations. On the GH it often appears from 50,000 km and returns after standard repairs.
Tail lights and rear lights on the Mazda 6 GH fail prematurely. Moisture ingress or internal short circuits can cause entire light units to malfunction.
