Fun Factor? Fun to Drive!

Skyactiv-G 120 β€” the ideal all-rounder

The 2.0-litre Skyactiv with 120 hp is the balanced choice in the 3 BM β€” lively, economical and pleasant to shift. In corners the 3 BM rewards with precise steering and a sporty chassis. The lateral forces build up progressively through a well-calibrated steering rack.

Engine Weaknesses 6

!! Carbon build-up on intake valves

Direct-injection carbon build-up on intake valves from crankcase breather oil mist. Typically occurs between 100,000–160,000 km. Walnut blasting is the only lasting solution.

Symptoms: Rough cold start with misfire codes P0300–P0304, sluggish throttle response, increased fuel consumption

185–800 $ from 110,000 km
!! Low oil pressure β€” oil pump pressure relief valve

Particularly on early build years 2012–2014, contamination in the oil pump pressure relief valve can reduce oil pressure. Persistently low oil pressure accelerates bearing wear considerably.

Symptoms: Oil pressure warning light illuminates, knocking noises from the engine, increased engine noise at low revs

350–700 $ from 80,000 km
! Defective coolant control valve (thermostat)

A manufacturing deviation in the electric coolant control valve allows coolant to enter the dry chamber. The valve opens too early. TSI R054-21 affects all SkyActiv-G engines.

Symptoms: Extended warm-up phase, blue coolant warning light, poor heater output at idle

150–400 $
! Oil control valve (OCV) β€” seal leakage

The oil control valve on the variable valve timing system is prone to seal leakage. Oil enters the intake system and increases carbon deposits. Can amplify misfires.

Symptoms: Oil film visible around the OCV housing, increased oil consumption, misfire codes from oil contamination

100–350 $ from 100,000 km
! Hydraulic valve lifters ticking (HLA noise)

The PE-VPS develops tapping or ticking noises from around 30,000 km due to faulty hydraulic valve lifters. Mazda released revised HLA versions from spring 2022. Warranty replacement is possible on newer vehicles.

Symptoms: Deep, slow ticking at operating temperature, particularly at low revs. Noise disappears when the oil pressure sensor is disconnected.

200–600 $ from 40,000 km
! Intake valves carboned up β€” walnut blasting required

As a direct-injection engine the PE-VPS does not clean its intake valves with fuel. From around 80,000 km without BeDi treatment, carbon deposits become so severe that only walnut blasting helps. A measurable power loss of around 10 hp is typical.

Symptoms: Gradual power loss, increased fuel consumption, rough idle behaviour. No sudden symptoms β€” deterioration occurs over months.

185–350 $ from 80,000 km

Vehicle Weaknesses 6

! Electronics MZD Connect infotainment freezes or fails to start

The MZD Connect system crashes, shows a black screen or fails to recognise navigation and USB devices. Problems occur particularly in cold temperatures. The cause is often the SD card or faulty firmware.

0–300 $
! Suspension Springs squeak and shock absorbers wear

Suspension springs develop squeaking from 100,000 km, especially at low speed over bumps. Shock absorbers are flagged at later MOT inspections. The firm suspension shows wear earlier.

300–800 $ from 100,000 km
! Electronics Battery failure as the most common breakdown cause

According to ADAC statistics, battery failure is the most common breakdown cause on the Mazda 3 BM. Especially on vehicles with frequent short trips or start-stop systems, the battery is due for replacement after 4–5 years.

80–200 $
! Brakes Front brake discs wear quickly

Front brake discs and pads need renewing more frequently than on comparable vehicles. Discs can be below minimum thickness from as early as 50,000–60,000 km.

200–500 $ from 55,000 km
! Gearbox Manual gearbox notchy, especially when cold

Early BM models exhibit a notchy shift feel, especially in the morning with a cold gearbox. Engaging gears requires noticeably more effort. The problem diminishes once the gearbox warms up.

100–600 $
i Interior Seats squeak and creak

Seats develop creaking and squeaking from around 50,000 km, especially the driver's seat. The cause is friction points in the seat frame. The problem is well known and often can only be fixed by removing the seat.

50–300 $ from 50,000 km
