Mazda 3
1.6-litre MZR four-cylinder with chain drive. Solid entry-level engine with low fuel consumption for the compact class.
Sensible daily driver
The base engine handles city traffic and is economical. The capable chassis hints at what would be possible with more power.
Engine Weaknesses 6
At higher mileages above 150,000 km, valve stem seals wear and cause mildly elevated oil consumption. Symptoms are most noticeable on cold start.
Symptoms: Slight blue smoke on cold start, slowly rising oil consumption to 0.3β0.5 l/1,000 km
The engine mount tends to fatigue from around 80,000β100,000 km. Regular vibrations appear in the cabin at operating temperature, especially at low revs.
Symptoms: Vibrations in the cabin every 3β4 seconds at operating temperature, more pronounced after long runs or with A/C on
The release bearing produces creaking and chirping noises when the clutch is operated. Occurs preferentially in damp conditions and at low temperatures. Disappears when the clutch is depressed.
Symptoms: Creaking and chirping when depressing the clutch, especially in damp conditions and cold weather
Intake tract leaks, a faulty lambda sensor, or a contaminated MAF sensor cause rough idle at 700 rpm. Fault memory readout is required for diagnosis.
Symptoms: Juddering and rough idle on cold start and at tick-over, improves under load
The Z6 engine's lambda sensor ages from around 90,000 km and responds too slowly. Fault code P0131 or P2251 (Bank 1 Sensor 1) triggers the engine warning light; elevated fuel consumption and poorer emissions test results follow.
Symptoms: Engine warning light; slightly elevated fuel consumption; poorer emissions test readings; fault code in OBD memory.
On the Z6 engine, the camshaft position sensor can lose signal recognition due to contamination. Sporadic hesitation and, in rare cases, engine stall while driving are typical symptoms.
Symptoms: Hesitation and juddering; engine cuts out; engine warning light with fault code P0340.
Vehicle Weaknesses 6
Tailgate damper brackets can rust and break on salt contact. Mazda recalled around 2.2 million vehicles worldwide, approx. 96,000 in Germany. Affected: BL models up to August 2013.
On vehicles up to build date 9/2010 the seat height adjuster can crack due to material weakness, or the retaining washers can detach, leading to complete failure. Approx. 23,000 vehicles affected.
The front suspension is frequently flagged at MOT inspections. Control arms and tie rod ends wear noticeably from 100,000 km. Repair is labour-intensive as bushings cannot be replaced separately.
The AC compressor can fail and then also produces noises when the air conditioning is switched on. The problem mainly occurs on older high-mileage examples.
Without follow-up corrosion protection, surface rust develops on underbody longitudinal and cross members, which can become structural corrosion with winter salt use. Older model years particularly affected.
The starter battery on the BL frequently fails after 3β5 years and is the most common ADAC breakdown cause. On vehicles with start-stop systems the failure rate increases further.
