Y6 1.6L CD 109 hp Manual Front-wheel drive Sedan 2009–2011
– Be Careful
Engine Y6 – Be Careful 4,680–15,600 $

Ford-based 1.6-litre common-rail diesel. Solid output for compact cars, well-known from the PSA/Ford family.

Fun Factor? Decent

Sensibly Mobile

The base engine handles city traffic and is economical. The good platform hints at what more power would unlock.

Engine Weaknesses 5

!! Turbocharger Damage from Insufficient Oil Supply

Soot deposits block the oil supply to the turbo radial bearing. The structurally tight oil quantity (380 instead of 500 ml/min) accelerates wear. A short cool-down period after hard driving helps.

Symptoms: Whistling noise from turbo, power drop, limp mode, exhaust smoke

800–2,500 $ from 120,000 km
!! High-Pressure Pump Generating Metal Particles

The high-pressure pump metering valve fails and the pump seizes. Metal particles reach all injectors β€” total failure of the injection system. The entire system must be replaced.

Symptoms: Engine won't start, all injectors failed simultaneously, power drop to zero

1,500–5,000 $ from 150,000 km
!! Diesel Particulate Filter Blocked

The DPF does not fully regenerate with short-trip driving. Eolys additive must be topped up every 60,000 km. A clogged DPF also stresses the turbocharger through increased exhaust backpressure.

Symptoms: DPF warning light, power loss, elevated consumption, limp mode

500–2,000 $ from 120,000 km
!! Injectors Leaking and Worn

The PSA diesel injectors and their copper sealing rings leak. Individual repair is usually not possible; replacing all injectors is expensive. Clean installation is critical.

Symptoms: Soot accumulation around injectors, exhaust smell inside the cabin, rough running, starting difficulties

600–2,500 $ from 130,000 km
! EGR Valve Sooted Up and Sticking

The EGR valve of the 1.6 CD clogs and sticks due to heavy soot loads. Especially common with short-trip drivers. An ECU software update can help.

Symptoms: Power drop above 2,000 rpm, idle fluctuation, limp mode, ESP warning light

100–400 $ from 100,000 km

Vehicle Weaknesses 6

!! Other Recall: tailgate damper bracket corrodes and breaks

Tailgate damper brackets can rust and break on salt contact. Mazda recalled around 2.2 million vehicles worldwide, approx. 96,000 in Germany. Affected: BL models up to August 2013.

!! Other Recall: seat height adjuster can break due to material weakness

On vehicles up to build date 9/2010 the seat height adjuster can crack due to material weakness, or the retaining washers can detach, leading to complete failure. Approx. 23,000 vehicles affected.

0–0 $
!! Suspension Front axle: control arms and joints worn

The front suspension is frequently flagged at MOT inspections. Control arms and tie rod ends wear noticeably from 100,000 km. Repair is labour-intensive as bushings cannot be replaced separately.

300–800 $ from 110,000 km
!! HVAC AC compressor faulty

The AC compressor can fail and then also produces noises when the air conditioning is switched on. The problem mainly occurs on older high-mileage examples.

600–1,200 $ from 130,000 km
!! Rust Rust on underbody and cross members

Without follow-up corrosion protection, surface rust develops on underbody longitudinal and cross members, which can become structural corrosion with winter salt use. Older model years particularly affected.

200–1,000 $ from 80,000 km
! Electronics Battery frequently faulty

The starter battery on the BL frequently fails after 3–5 years and is the most common ADAC breakdown cause. On vehicles with start-stop systems the failure rate increases further.
