Mazda 2
1.5-litre SkyActiv-D with low compression ratio. Economical small-car diesel with good low-end pull.
Diesel in a Small Car β Functional
The 1.5-litre Skyactiv diesel with 105 hp delivers decent performance for a city car and excels with low consumption. The DJ's chassis is good, but the diesel character doesn't suit the lively image of the Mazda 2. Sensible for high-mileage drivers, wrong engine for country road fans.
Engine Weaknesses 5
The 1.5 SkyActiv-D shows the same DPF sensitivity as its larger siblings. Short-trip use prevents complete regeneration, and the DPF clogs faster than average.
Symptoms: Warning message 'DPF check required', noticeably elevated fuel consumption, occasional engine power limiter active, bluish exhaust smoke.
The small 1.5 regenerates the DPF more frequently because the smaller engine is under greater load. Fuel entry into the oil is a structural characteristic and requires shorter service intervals.
Symptoms: Oil level rises above MAX mark, fuel smell on dipstick, onboard computer signals early oil change requirement.
Soot deposits from exhaust gas recirculation accumulate in the intake tract and on the intake valves of the small diesel. Cleaning is often necessary at higher mileages.
Symptoms: Hesitation at part throttle, power loss, rough idle, elevated fuel consumption, occasional engine warning light.
Mazda improved the A/C evaporator in the Mazda 2 DJ in August 2016 following defect reports. Vehicles from early production (up to Aug. 2016) are affected by condenser and evaporator defects caused by supplier errors. Refrigerant escapes through micro-pores.
Symptoms: A/C no longer cools; no cold air on activation; compressor does not engage due to low pressure.
Some manual gearboxes in the Mazda 2 DJ show a tendency to block when engaging first gear from neutral from the factory. Several owners report the gear lever feeling locked during an Nβ1 change.
Symptoms: First gear cannot be engaged from neutral, or only with considerable force; especially when stationary; dealer software finds no cause.
Vehicle Weaknesses 6
Vehicles produced October 2017 to May 2020 are affected by a recall for micro-cracks in the fuel pump impeller. The pump can fail and the engine can stall while driving. Free replacement at dealers.
A known warranty case on the Mazda 2 DJ: both rear seatbelts no longer retract correctly. The problem affects multiple vehicles and was initially not acknowledged as a defect by some dealers.
On the Mazda 2 DJ rear shock absorbers start leaking oil from around 35,000β40,000 km. The TΓV Report rates this area with 2.5% serious defects. Many replacements were still carried out under warranty.
On the Mazda 2 DJ (up to July 2016) faulty brazing joints from the supplier were fitted, leading to leaking evaporators and condensers. Many cases were handled under warranty. Evaporator replacement is particularly labour-intensive.
On the Mazda 2 DJ individual doors can stop responding to the central locking. The cause is corroded contacts in the door locks, faulty actuators or a control unit problem. Typically occurs from 60,000β100,000 km.
The Mazda 2 DJ fails MOT/TΓV inspections above average for lighting defects. Headlights and rear lights are cited as weak points in inspection evaluations. Regular lighting checks are recommended.
