Mazda 2
1.5-litre SkyActiv-G with 24V mild hybrid system. The integrated starter-generator assists on pull-away and reduces fuel consumption.
Quick City Car
The stronger engine in the lightweight 2 delivers surprising fun. Quick in town, nimble on country roads β an underrated driver's car.
Engine Weaknesses 4
Like all SkyActiv-G direct-injection engines, the mild-hybrid 1.5 is prone to intake valve carbon deposits. Chemical cleaning every 40,000 km and walnut blasting from 80,000 km are recommended.
Symptoms: Rough cold start, power loss under full throttle, increased fuel consumption, uneven idle
The M-Hybrid system uses a special 12 V lithium-ion starter battery. Premature capacity loss occurs with predominantly short-trip use; replacement costs significantly more than a conventional lead-acid unit.
Symptoms: Engine start problems, warning in the instrument cluster, reduced mild-hybrid recuperation
The serpentine belt of the integrated starter-generator (B-ISG) can squeal or produce vibrations due to wear or ageing. Silicone spray is a temporary fix; permanent replacement is recommended. Warranty coverage may apply.
Symptoms: Squealing from the engine bay, particularly on cold starts or under acceleration. Noise can be intermittent.
The mild-hybrid's i-Stop system requires at least 2 charge bars on the 24 V lithium battery. When the charge level is low or the air conditioning is active, the system automatically disables stop-start. Not a genuine fault but a comfort limitation.
Symptoms: i-Stop indicator goes out or shows readiness issues, stop-start does not activate at traffic lights, slightly higher fuel consumption in city driving.
Vehicle Weaknesses 6
Vehicles produced October 2017 to May 2020 are affected by a recall for micro-cracks in the fuel pump impeller. The pump can fail and the engine can stall while driving. Free replacement at dealers.
A known warranty case on the Mazda 2 DJ: both rear seatbelts no longer retract correctly. The problem affects multiple vehicles and was initially not acknowledged as a defect by some dealers.
On the Mazda 2 DJ rear shock absorbers start leaking oil from around 35,000β40,000 km. The TΓV Report rates this area with 2.5% serious defects. Many replacements were still carried out under warranty.
On the Mazda 2 DJ (up to July 2016) faulty brazing joints from the supplier were fitted, leading to leaking evaporators and condensers. Many cases were handled under warranty. Evaporator replacement is particularly labour-intensive.
On the Mazda 2 DJ individual doors can stop responding to the central locking. The cause is corroded contacts in the door locks, faulty actuators or a control unit problem. Typically occurs from 60,000β100,000 km.
The Mazda 2 DJ fails MOT/TΓV inspections above average for lighting defects. Headlights and rear lights are cited as weak points in inspection evaluations. Regular lighting checks are recommended.
