Mazda 2
Compact 1.3-litre four-cylinder with variable valve timing. Economical and reliable in urban traffic.
Light and agile, but gutless
The 1.3 in the Mazda 2 DE is a typical city engine — light, frugal and agile, but quickly out of its depth on B-roads. The firm suspension and precise shifter make it fun in urban traffic and on short runs. Anyone needing more performance should go for the 1.5.
Engine Weaknesses 6
Oil seeps from the belt side of the engine block, often as a light weep. The cause is ageing shaft seals and sump gaskets. Not a dramatic loss, but regular oil level checks are needed.
Symptoms: Oil contamination visible on the right-hand side of the engine, oil level drops slowly
Individual ignition coils fail from heat under the engine cover. Moisture and corrosion at the connectors accelerate wear. Sequential failures are common.
Symptoms: Engine management light on, misfires, engine judders and runs rough
The electronic EGR valve with stepper motor jams in a slightly open position due to soot deposits. The ECU does not always detect the fault; idle becomes rough.
Symptoms: Rough idle, power loss, engine judders at low revs
At high mileage or with poor-quality oil, oil control rings coke up. Particularly common with short-trip use. Consumption can rise above 1 litre/1,000 km. Fully synthetic oil and short service intervals help.
Symptoms: Dropping oil level after a few thousand km, faint blue exhaust smoke
The knock sensor on the ZJ-VE sits under the intake manifold and generates fault code P0328 (signal level too high) from around 80,000 km. Ignition control enters limp mode; slight power loss possible.
Symptoms: Engine warning light on; no noticeable power loss during normal driving; fault code P0328 on OBD readout.
The ZJ-VE valve cover gasket becomes porous from around 90,000 km. Oil loss at the cam cover is visible, often also at the rubber rings of the spark plug recesses. Normal operation is possible, but monitor oil level.
Symptoms: Oil traces on the cam cover and cylinder head; faint burning smell after shutdown; oil spots under the vehicle.
Vehicle Weaknesses 6
All Mazda 2 DE (2007–2014) are affected by the worldwide Takata airbag recall. Defective inflators can propel metal fragments when the airbag deploys. Free repair at Mazda dealers.
Tie rod ends on the Mazda 2 DE wear comparatively early, causing clicking when turning from standstill. MOT/TÜV reports list worn steering as a recurring defect. Replacing both sides including wheel alignment is recommended.
Early DE models up to model year 2008 showed premature wheel bearing wear, with some replacements carried out under warranty. Later model years are largely unaffected.
The air conditioning condenser on the Mazda 2 is exposed and vulnerable to stone damage causing refrigerant loss. On older vehicles corrosion at solder joints can also occur. Repair typically includes recharging the refrigerant.
Older DE examples show underbody rust from around 10 years of age, particularly on brake lines, strut towers and longitudinal members. Mazda skimps on factory underseal. Without follow-up treatment winter salt use accelerates corrosion.
ADAC breakdown statistics list the starter battery of the Mazda 2 DE as a major failure point. Particularly with short-trip use the battery discharges. On older vehicles batteries wear out faster than usual.
