Mazda 2

Y6 1.6L CD 90 hp Manual Front-wheel drive Hatchback 2009–2010
– Be Careful
Engine Y6 – Be Careful 4,310–14,630 €

Ford-based 1.6-litre common-rail diesel. Solid output for compact cars, well-known from the PSA/Ford family.

Fun Factor? Fun to Drive!

Agile Manual

With the manual gearbox, the small Mazda shows its full character. Light, direct and surprisingly keen through corners.

Engine Weaknesses 5

!! Turbocharger Damage from Insufficient Oil Supply

Soot deposits block the oil supply to the turbo radial bearing. The structurally tight oil quantity (380 instead of 500 ml/min) accelerates wear. A short cool-down period after hard driving helps.

Symptoms: Whistling noise from turbo, power drop, limp mode, exhaust smoke

800–2,500 € from 120,000 km
!! High-Pressure Pump Generating Metal Particles

The high-pressure pump metering valve fails and the pump seizes. Metal particles reach all injectors — total failure of the injection system. The entire system must be replaced.

Symptoms: Engine won't start, all injectors failed simultaneously, power drop to zero

1,500–5,000 € from 150,000 km
!! Diesel Particulate Filter Blocked

The DPF does not fully regenerate with short-trip driving. Eolys additive must be topped up every 60,000 km. A clogged DPF also stresses the turbocharger through increased exhaust backpressure.

Symptoms: DPF warning light, power loss, elevated consumption, limp mode

500–2,000 € from 120,000 km
!! Injectors Leaking and Worn

The PSA diesel injectors and their copper sealing rings leak. Individual repair is usually not possible; replacing all injectors is expensive. Clean installation is critical.

Symptoms: Soot accumulation around injectors, exhaust smell inside the cabin, rough running, starting difficulties

600–2,500 € from 130,000 km
! EGR Valve Sooted Up and Sticking

The EGR valve of the 1.6 CD clogs and sticks due to heavy soot loads. Especially common with short-trip drivers. An ECU software update can help.

Symptoms: Power drop above 2,000 rpm, idle fluctuation, limp mode, ESP warning light

100–400 € from 100,000 km

Vehicle Weaknesses 6

!! Other Recall: Takata airbag (entire model range)

All Mazda 2 DE (2007–2014) are affected by the worldwide Takata airbag recall. Defective inflators can propel metal fragments when the airbag deploys. Free repair at Mazda dealers.

! Steering Tie rod ends wear prematurely

Tie rod ends on the Mazda 2 DE wear comparatively early, causing clicking when turning from standstill. MOT/TÜV reports list worn steering as a recurring defect. Replacing both sides including wheel alignment is recommended.

180–350 € from 80,000 km
! Suspension Wheel bearing premature wear (up to MY 2008)

Early DE models up to model year 2008 showed premature wheel bearing wear, with some replacements carried out under warranty. Later model years are largely unaffected.

150–300 € from 70,000 km
! HVAC AC condenser leaking due to stone impact

The air conditioning condenser on the Mazda 2 is exposed and vulnerable to stone damage causing refrigerant loss. On older vehicles corrosion at solder joints can also occur. Repair typically includes recharging the refrigerant.

300–800 € from 100,000 km
! Rust Underbody rust on older examples

Older DE examples show underbody rust from around 10 years of age, particularly on brake lines, strut towers and longitudinal members. Mazda skimps on factory underseal. Without follow-up treatment winter salt use accelerates corrosion.

100–600 € from 120,000 km
! Electronics Starter battery as the main breakdown cause

ADAC breakdown statistics list the starter battery of the Mazda 2 DE as a major failure point. Particularly with short-trip use the battery discharges. On older vehicles batteries wear out faster than usual.

80–180 € from 80,000 km
