Lexus RX 350
The 2GR-FE 3.5L V6 easily clears 300k+ km. VVT-i oil line (rubber hose) was a recall issue on pre-2010 models. Check water pump and ignition coils from 50k km. One of the most robust engines in its class.
The original luxury crossover formula
The second-generation RX established the template: comfortable, quiet, invisible to drive. The 3.5L V6 is smooth and reliable. Dashboard cracking affects most examples โ check the ZLD warranty program status. VVT-i oil line recall on 2007-2009 models is mandatory. Water pump around 80k miles. Everything else is minor. A high-mileage XU30 RX with service history is one of the safest used SUV purchases available.
Engine Weaknesses 3
The rubber section of the VVT-i oil supply hose degrades from PCV blow-by gases. Develops a pinhole that expands into full rupture. Oil loss at highway speed causes catastrophic engine failure from oil starvation. Lexus issued warranty enhancement program TSB POL-14-02 in July 2014. Revised all-metal replacement part 15678-31010 available but some replacements also fail.
Symptoms: Oil puddle under engine, low oil pressure warning light, sudden engine noise, oil spray on undercarriage
The 2GR-FE is notorious for oil leaking from the front timing chain cover where the block, head, and cover converge. RTV sealant fails over time. Repair requires engine and transmission removal on the RX due to tight packaging. Toyota estimates 24 hours labor for a $20 gasket. The leak is cosmetic initially but worsens progressively.
Symptoms: Oil drip from front of engine, oil on AC compressor area, burning oil smell, oil puddle after parking
Water pump failures are documented across the 2GR-FE family. The internal water pump can leak coolant externally or fail mechanically, causing overheating. Multiple shops report this as one of the most common 2GR-FE repairs. Failure can occur as early as 60,000 miles.
Symptoms: Coolant leak from pump area, engine overheating, coolant level drops, steam from engine bay
Vehicle Weaknesses 13
The hybrid brake actuator assembly can fail internally. ABS and VSC lights illuminate, brake pedal becomes soft, and unusual pump noises are audible.
The electric coolant pump for the hybrid inverter fails. Without cooling the inverter can overheat, causing the entire hybrid system to shut down.
Inadequately soldered transistors in the Intelligent Power Module can be damaged by heat. Hybrid system may shut down while driving.
Brake master cylinder seal can be damaged by non-OEM brake fluid. Slow brake fluid leak leads to degraded braking performance.
Dashboard material cracks and deteriorates from UV exposure and heat cycling. Most-reported complaint on 2007-2009 RX 350 models. Covered under Lexus warranty enhancement program ZLD (expired). Replacement dashboards cost $1,000-$2,500 if not covered.
Power steering rack develops seepage, causing fluid loss. Common past 75,000 miles. Low fluid causes pump whine and reduced assist. Rack replacement is the permanent fix; fluid top-up is temporary.
Airbag warning light illuminates due to sensor or wiring issues. Often caused by seat occupancy sensor failure in the passenger seat. Does not indicate deployment risk but disables airbag system until diagnosed.
The steering rack's outer high-pressure seal fails almost exclusively on the passenger side. Power steering fluid leaks into the inner tie rod boot, causing unnoticed corrosion.
Sunroof drain tubes clog with leaves and debris. Water pools in the catch tray and intrudes into the cabin, soaking the passenger-side carpet.
Door lock actuators fail intermittently, preventing doors from locking or unlocking via keyless entry or interior switch. Common on front doors. Replacement requires door panel removal.
Sunroof drain tubes clog with debris, causing water to back up and leak into the cabin. Primarily affects headliner area and A-pillars. Cleaning the drains is the preventive measure.
Upper strut mounts harden and wear over time. Pronounced clunking or rattling over bumps from the front suspension, creaking when turning.
Bank 1 oxygen sensors wear out and trigger both check engine and VSC warning lights simultaneously. Common codes P0420 or O2 sensor heater circuit faults.
