Lexus RX 350
2.4L turbo four โ replaces the 3.5L V6 in the 2023+ RX and NX 350. Adequate power but noticeably less refined than the V6 it replaces. Timing chain stretch is the long-term concern โ inspection at 80,000 miles, replacement at 120,000 miles. EGR cooler cracks have been documented on early units. Fuel injection system issues can appear around 50,000-60,000 miles. Still a young engine with limited long-term data. The turbo-four in a luxury SUV feels like a cost reduction, not an improvement.
The turbo-four RX โ efficient, less refined
275 hp from a 2.4L turbo replaces the silky V6. It is faster on paper but louder and less refined in practice. The new interior and infotainment are excellent. Timing chain and EGR concerns are emerging. Four recalls in the first two model years is unusual for Lexus. The hybrid RX 350h is the better buy if refinement matters more than towing capacity.
Engine Weaknesses 3
The T24A-FTS timing chain stretches over time despite Toyota marketing it as maintenance-free. Tensioners compensate initially but eventually the chain develops a subtle rattle. If unaddressed, the chain can jump or break, requiring engine replacement. Inspection recommended at 80,000 miles, replacement at 120,000 miles. Expected lifespan of the engine is 160,000-180,000 miles with proper maintenance.
Symptoms: Subtle rattling noise on cold start, check engine light (timing codes), rough idle, reduced power
Early production T24A-FTS engines show cracking of the EGR cooler, allowing coolant to leak into the combustion chamber. Produces white smoke from exhaust and progressive coolant loss. The EGR valve itself can also clog around 100,000 miles. Early 2022-2023 production units appear most affected.
Symptoms: White smoke from exhaust, coolant level dropping with no visible external leak, sweet smell from exhaust
The D-4ST dual injection system is sensitive to fuel quality and purity. Injector fouling documented around 50,000-60,000 miles. The engine requires 91 octane premium fuel โ using regular fuel can cause damage and may void warranty. Regular fuel filter changes recommended.
Symptoms: Rough idle, hesitation under acceleration, check engine light, reduced fuel economy
Vehicle Weaknesses 10
Vehicle Stability Control system may not re-enable after driver disables it and restarts the vehicle. Software update corrects the issue. Free dealer service under recall.
Vibration or shudder in Drive and Reverse under 8 mph. TSB L-SB-0059-23 requires transaxle control module replacement.
New touchscreen infotainment system has software bugs including Apple CarPlay disconnects, Bluetooth pairing failures, and navigation errors. Software updates address most issues over time.
Rearview camera image may not display when vehicle is placed in reverse. Software issue on certain 2022-2025 models. Covered under recall.
Front drive shafts produce rotational clicking when accelerating while turning at low speed. TSB L-SB-0033-24.
Noticeable hesitation when starting from a stop. ECU software update resolves it. Service Campaign 24LC03.
Front HVAC blower motor produces a high-pitched whine when heater or AC is running. Noticeable at low fan speeds.
The 2.4L turbo-four is noticeably less refined than the V6 it replaces. Buzzy engine note during acceleration, vibration at idle. Not a defect โ inherent to the four-cylinder design in a vehicle previously equipped with a V6.
Some owners report wind noise from door seals at highway speeds. Door seal adjustment typically resolves. Minor quality issue for a first-year redesign.
Garnish trim above glove box can loosen or detach. Affects the suede panel on passenger side.
