Lexus IS 300
2.0L turbo four — Toyota/Lexus's first turbocharged engine in decades. Lifespan around 130,000-150,000 miles is poor by Toyota standards. Water pump failures as early as 20,000 miles on early production units. Timing chain can jump without warning — engine replacement territory. 2015-2016 turbochargers were problematic; post-2017 production improved significantly. Three thermostats create cascading failure risk. The aluminum block cannot be repaired if overheating occurs. Adequate power for the NX, but this is not a Toyota engine that inspires confidence in longevity.
Turbo four in a sport sedan — functional, not exciting
241 hp from the 2.0L turbo is adequate on paper. In practice, turbo lag and the bland power delivery make the IS 300t feel slower than the numbers suggest. The 8AR-FTS reliability record is Toyota's weakest — water pump failures, timing chain concerns, and a 130-150k mile expected lifespan that is poor for Lexus. The IS 300 exists because CAFE standards required a smaller engine option. Buy the IS 350 if possible.

Water pump fails as early as 20,000 miles on early production units. Replacement often requires timing chain kit removal due to location. If the water pump leaks onto the timing chain, both need replacement. Overheating from pump failure causes irreparable damage to the aluminum block.

Timing chain jumps teeth without warning, causing valve-to-piston contact. Engine replacement typically required as repair costs exceed engine value. Poor by Toyota standards — the 8AR-FTS chain system lacks the longevity of naturally aspirated Toyota engines.

Vacuum regulating valve for the turbine bypass fails on 2015-2016 production units. Causes unstable engine operation at high speed with power dips. TSB issued. Post-2017 turbochargers are improved. Most early failures were replaced under warranty.

Direct injection only on the 8AR-FTS means carbon deposits accumulate on intake valves. Walnut blasting recommended from 50,000-60,000 miles. Less severe than the 4GR-FSE due to higher operating temperatures that partially burn off deposits.
Symptoms: Rough idle, hesitation, reduced power, slightly higher fuel consumption

Air conditioning compressor fails, losing cooling capacity. Documented past 60,000 miles. Replacement includes compressor, receiver/drier, and system flush.
Lexus Remote Touch touchpad interface is difficult to use while driving. Cursor control is imprecise. Design limitation present across all XE30 IS models. No technical fix — muscle memory or aftermarket replacement are the options.
Front and rear suspension bushings wear, particularly on F Sport models driven on rough roads. Causes clunking and vague handling. Bushing replacement restores factory feel.
Front brake rotors warp under repeated hard braking. F Sport models with larger brakes are somewhat less affected. Quality aftermarket rotors may outlast OEM. Resurface or replace at pad change intervals.
Screen goes black and reboots, often after faulty OTA update. Navigation and climate controls inaccessible.
Paint chips easily on the hood and front bumper from stone impacts. Thin clear coat. Paint protection film recommended at purchase. Common across many modern Lexus models.
