Lexus IS 300
The 2GR-FSE 3.5L V6 is rock-solid โ 200k+ miles is normal. Known issue: cylinder 5 overheating by design can cause oil consumption and cylinder wall damage. Check water pump and coils from 30-50k miles.
IS 300 AWD โ V6 detuned, all-weather capable
The IS 300 AWD uses the 2GR-FSE V6 detuned to 260 hp. AWD adds winter traction at the cost of weight and fuel economy. The V6 is proven and reliable. A solid all-season sport sedan for northern climates.
Engine Weaknesses 2
Similar to the 4GR-FSE but less prevalent. Cylinder bore scuffing leads to oil consumption. Block replacement is the only permanent fix due to thin-wall liner construction. Most 2GR-FSE engines avoid this issue with proper maintenance.
Symptoms: Gradual increase in oil consumption, blue smoke on cold start, oil on spark plugs
Water pump bearing or seal fails, causing coolant leak. Documented past 80,000 miles. Thermostat often replaced simultaneously. Overheating risk if not addressed promptly.
Symptoms: Coolant leak from front of engine, overheating, antifreeze smell, low coolant warning
Vehicle Weaknesses 6
Air conditioning compressor fails, losing cooling capacity. Documented past 60,000 miles. Replacement includes compressor, receiver/drier, and system flush.
Lexus Remote Touch touchpad interface is difficult to use while driving. Cursor control is imprecise. Design limitation present across all XE30 IS models. No technical fix โ muscle memory or aftermarket replacement are the options.
Front and rear suspension bushings wear, particularly on F Sport models driven on rough roads. Causes clunking and vague handling. Bushing replacement restores factory feel.
Front brake rotors warp under repeated hard braking. F Sport models with larger brakes are somewhat less affected. Quality aftermarket rotors may outlast OEM. Resurface or replace at pad change intervals.
Screen goes black and reboots, often after faulty OTA update. Navigation and climate controls inaccessible.
Paint chips easily on the hood and front bumper from stone impacts. Thin clear coat. Paint protection film recommended at purchase. Common across many modern Lexus models.
