Lexus GX 460
The 1UR-FE 4.6L V8 is a 500k-km engine with proper maintenance. Known issues: valley plate coolant leak (~$1,500), valve cover seals letting oil onto spark plugs, water pump replacement at 100k miles. No engine in this class is more long-lived.
The Land Cruiser they let you buy โ body-on-frame luxury off-road
The GX 460 shares its platform with the Land Cruiser Prado and ran for 13 model years with minimal changes. The 4.6L V8 is one of Toyota's most reliable engines โ 300,000+ miles is routine. Valley plate coolant leak around 75,000 miles is the main expense ($1,500). Air suspension on equipped models will eventually fail. Frame rust in salt states is the real risk. The interior was outdated by 2015. None of that matters to GX buyers who tow, off-road, and put 200k trouble-free miles on the clock.
Engine Weaknesses 4
The coolant passage between the cylinder heads passes through a valley plate gasket that degrades over time. Coolant leaks internally or externally around 75,000-80,000 miles. Repair requires intake manifold removal and averages $1,500-$1,600 at independent shops. A well-known and expected maintenance item on the 1UR-FE.
Symptoms: Coolant loss with no visible external leak, coolant smell from engine bay, coolant drip from center of engine
Moisture degrades the air injection pump filter in the emissions system. Service Campaign JLG covers 2010-2013 GX 460 models at no charge with no mileage or year limits. Lexus dealers replace the pump filter, switching valves, and pump if damaged. California requires campaign completion for vehicle registration renewal.
Symptoms: Check engine light (P02445), 4LO flash, TRAC OFF warning lights, emissions test failure
The 1UR-FE water pump has a documented lifespan of approximately 60,000-100,000 miles. Premature failure can occur as early as 38,000 miles in some cases. Replacement is moderately labor-intensive but straightforward. A proactive replacement at 60,000-80,000 miles is recommended by experienced shops.
Symptoms: Coolant leak from pump, overheating, coolant in drive belt area, whining from front of engine
Nearly universal past 80,000 miles โ the timing chain cover develops a minor oil weep. 95% of cases are cosmetic and do not require repair. Oil consumption does not increase meaningfully. Can be cleaned periodically and monitored. Full repair requires significant disassembly and is rarely cost-justified.
Symptoms: Minor oil residue on front of engine, oil film near AC compressor, slight oil smell after driving
Vehicle Weaknesses 11
Corrosion on the KDSS accumulator below the driver seat causes pressure loss. Repair extremely expensive as lines and accumulator often need joint replacement.
Body-on-frame construction is susceptible to frame rust in salt-belt states. Toyota applied undercoating from factory but coverage varies. Annual rust-proofing recommended in northern climates. Frame replacement is expensive ($3,000-$5,000) if corrosion is severe.
The 1UR-FE V8 develops a coolant leak from the valley plate gasket between the cylinder banks. The only real maintenance item on this engine. Costs around $1,500 for dealer repair. Some owners DIY with valley plate resealing kits.
The 6-speed automatic lacks a factory transmission cooler on most trim levels. Towing or sustained off-road use causes transmission fluid temperatures to climb. Aftermarket transmission cooler ($60-$300) is a recommended first modification for any GX that tows or goes off-road.
Moisture degrades SAIP filter and damages emission components. CEL, VSC and 4LO lights, limp mode. Service Campaign JLG.
Alternator (Denso 150A) fails more frequently than typical Toyota V8. Difficult access from underneath.
Valve cover and spark plug tube seals degrade. Oil seeps into spark plug wells. Rear plugs require intake manifold removal.
Lower control arm bushings become dry-rotted, ball joints lose grease. Steering shake at ~55 mph and uneven tire wear.
Shift solenoids stick below 50ยฐF, transmission won't shift 3rd to 4th. Resolves after warming up.
Door lock actuators fail intermittently. Doors can only be opened from inside. Driver door most affected.
The infotainment system was outdated by 2015 and ran unchanged through 2023. Low-resolution screen, slow navigation, no CarPlay or Android Auto. Aftermarket head unit replacement is the common solution.
