Land Rover Velar P380
3.0-litre V6 Supercharged as the smaller blower option. The coolant crossover pipe beneath the supercharger is system-critical — if it fails, engine damage is often unavoidable. Preventive replacement with aluminium pipes is strongly recommended. Check supercharger coupling and timing chain regularly. Water pump replacement requires supercharger removal (expensive).
Velar P380: top of the V6 family
At 280 kW with supercharger the Velar P380 is the most emotionally engaging Velar of the first series. Supercharger response, refined sound, direct Velar handling — a combination that stays with you. Check for cooling system update before buying.
Engine Weaknesses 4
The plastic coolant crossover pipe running under the supercharger cracks suddenly from embrittlement. The engine is often irreparably overheated before the temperature warning appears. Very common cause of engine damage. Upgrade to aluminium pipes strongly recommended.
Symptoms: Sudden coolant loss (often instantaneous), overheating warning, steam, potential engine damage
Like the V8 versions, the AJ126 has timing chains with plastic guides. From around 100,000 km guides and tensioners can deteriorate. The supercharger setup increases engine load and accelerates wear.
Symptoms: Metallic rattling on cold start, P0008/P0016, engine light
The Eaton Roots supercharger torsional coupler breaks apart. The rattling sounds like gravel in the supercharger at idle and disappears under load. Land Rover TSB available. Typical failure around 90,000–110,000 km.
Symptoms: Rattling from supercharger at idle, decreasing supercharger output, power drop
The AJ126 water pump typically fails around 80,000 km. Since the supercharger must be removed for the job (12 hours labour), it makes sense to replace the coolant pipes and thermostat at the same time.
Symptoms: Coolant loss, tendency to overheat, noise from the water pump, coolant low warning
Vehicle Weaknesses 8
The dual touchscreen system freezes or shows a black screen while driving. Particularly affects models before MY2020. Software update 18D partially mitigated the problem.
Air suspension bellows become porous and lose air. The compressor has to work more frequently and wears faster. Vehicle drops after prolonged standing.
'Transmission Fault' message appears spontaneously and triggers limp mode. Faulty gearbox control unit or valve body must be replaced. Repair costs substantial.
Vehicles with 2.0-litre petrol engines built in 2018 were recalled due to leaking fuel rail connectors. Fuel can escape and create a fire risk. Free replacement at the dealer.
The electric retractable door handles remain extended after opening or fail to retract — especially in cold weather or frost. Lack of lubrication or faulty actuators are the causes.
The panoramic roof develops spontaneous cracks that spread. Water enters through the cracks. Full glass roof replacement required. Affects several model years.
The Touch Pro Duo system does not shut down completely when the vehicle is left unlocked. Battery drains overnight. Similar weakness to Range Rover Sport and Discovery 5.
Water enters the interior through faulty windscreen, A-pillar or tailgate seals. Electronic control units can be damaged.
