Land Rover Velar D240

204DTD 2.0L Ingenium Diesel 241 hp Automatic All-wheel drive SUV 2017–2020
✖ Stay Away!
Engine 204DTD ✖ Stay Away! 9,850–30,100 €

The 2.0L Ingenium four-cylinder diesel has been widely used since 2015 but suffers from structural weaknesses: timing chain (particularly vulnerable pre-2019), oil dilution from DPF regeneration on short trips, and turbocharger problems caused by poor oil quality. Oil changes every 10,000 km instead of the recommended 21,000 km are strongly advised.

Fun Factor? Decent

Velar D240: driving comfort meets Ingenium

The D240 gives the Velar enough momentum for refined motorway stints. The Velar's suspension calibration shows its strength here — the engine delivers the right amount of thrust. No emotion, but sovereign touring performance.

Engine Weaknesses 7

!! Timing chain stretches prematurely

The 204DTD timing chain stretches prematurely due to worn plastic guides and degraded lubrication from oil dilution. Chains fitted before 2019 are particularly affected. Chain snap is possible.

Symptoms: Metallic rattling on cold start, engine warning light, power loss, fault codes P0016 or P0341

1,800–4,500 € from 90,000 km
!! Oil dilution from DPF regeneration

Incomplete DPF regeneration cycles allow unburnt fuel to drip into the sump. Particularly critical on short trips with the transversely mounted engine — the distance between turbo and DPF is too great for passive regeneration.

Symptoms: Early service warning well before interval, oil level above max mark, fuel smell in oil, increased engine wear

100–300 € from 30,000 km
!! Turbocharger failure due to oil starvation

Turbochargers fail due to oil dilution-related lubrication degradation and plastic debris from timing chain guides. A second turbocharger can be destroyed by debris from the first.

Symptoms: Blue or black exhaust smoke, whistling or hissing noise, severe power loss, engine warning light

3,500–7,000 € from 100,000 km
!! Injector failure

The 204DTD common rail injectors are damaged by fuel contamination and elevated operating temperatures. Over-fuelling leads to extreme heat buildup and can damage pistons and cylinder liners.

Symptoms: Rough idle, difficult cold starts, excessive black exhaust smoke, increased fuel consumption

400–1,500 € from 120,000 km
!! EGR valve carbon buildup

The 204DTD EGR valve carbons up with predominantly short-trip and stop-and-go use. A blocked valve increases emissions and adds further load to the pistons.

Symptoms: Excessive soot, power loss at low RPM, engine warning light, rough idle

400–1,000 € from 80,000 km
!! Piston cooling valve failure due to coolant leak

Coolant leak at the thermostat housing drips onto the piston cooling valve solenoid and destroys it. Causes a false "critically low oil level" warning even when oil level is correct. Part number LR073684.

Symptoms: Yellow engine warning light, false critically low oil level warning, diagnostic code P25A9-00

300–600 € from 60,000 km
!! DPF blockage from incomplete regeneration

The DPF regenerates poorly on the transversely mounted Ingenium engine because the DPF sits too far from the turbo and barely reaches the required temperature. Particularly critical in urban driving.

Symptoms: DPF full warning, power drop, increased fuel consumption, difficulty on cold start

400–1,800 € from 80,000 km

Vehicle Weaknesses 8

!! Electronics Touch Pro Duo — screen black or frozen

The dual touchscreen system freezes or shows a black screen while driving. Particularly affects models before MY2020. Software update 18D partially mitigated the problem.

500–2,000 € from 30,000 km
!! Suspension Air suspension — bellows leaking, compressor overloaded

Air suspension bellows become porous and lose air. The compressor has to work more frequently and wears faster. Vehicle drops after prolonged standing.

600–2,500 € from 80,000 km
!! Gearbox Gearbox failure — mechatronic or valve body

'Transmission Fault' message appears spontaneously and triggers limp mode. Faulty gearbox control unit or valve body must be replaced. Repair costs substantial.

800–5,000 € from 60,000 km
!! Other Recall: fuel rail leaking (2.0L engines)

Vehicles with 2.0-litre petrol engines built in 2018 were recalled due to leaking fuel rail connectors. Fuel can escape and create a fire risk. Free replacement at the dealer.

0–0 €
!! Electronics Retractable door handles jam or fail to retract

The electric retractable door handles remain extended after opening or fail to retract — especially in cold weather or frost. Lack of lubrication or faulty actuators are the causes.

50–500 € from 30,000 km
!! Body Panoramic roof cracks spontaneously and lets in water

The panoramic roof develops spontaneous cracks that spread. Water enters through the cracks. Full glass roof replacement required. Affects several model years.

800–2,000 € from 50,000 km
!! Electronics Battery drain overnight — infotainment standby

The Touch Pro Duo system does not shut down completely when the vehicle is left unlocked. Battery drains overnight. Similar weakness to Range Rover Sport and Discovery 5.

100–400 € from 20,000 km
!! Body Water ingress into footwell or boot

Water enters the interior through faulty windscreen, A-pillar or tailgate seals. Electronic control units can be damaged.

100–1,000 € from 50,000 km
