Land Rover Range Rover
3.0-litre V6 Supercharged as the smaller blower option. The coolant crossover pipe beneath the supercharger is system-critical β if it fails, engine damage is often unavoidable. Preventive replacement with aluminium pipes is strongly recommended. Check supercharger coupling and timing chain regularly. Water pump replacement requires supercharger removal (expensive).
Range Rover 3.0 SC: supercharged refinement
In the big Range Rover the V6 Supercharged shows its emotional side. Effortless acceleration from standstill, refined sound, no diesel surge. For long hauls the best middle ground between diesel efficiency and V8 excess.
Engine Weaknesses 4
The plastic coolant crossover pipe running under the supercharger cracks suddenly from embrittlement. The engine is often irreparably overheated before the temperature warning appears. Very common cause of engine damage. Upgrade to aluminium pipes strongly recommended.
Symptoms: Sudden coolant loss (often instantaneous), overheating warning, steam, potential engine damage
Like the V8 versions, the AJ126 has timing chains with plastic guides. From around 100,000 km guides and tensioners can deteriorate. The supercharger setup increases engine load and accelerates wear.
Symptoms: Metallic rattling on cold start, P0008/P0016, engine light
The Eaton Roots supercharger torsional coupler breaks apart. The rattling sounds like gravel in the supercharger at idle and disappears under load. Land Rover TSB available. Typical failure around 90,000β110,000 km.
Symptoms: Rattling from supercharger at idle, decreasing supercharger output, power drop
The AJ126 water pump typically fails around 80,000 km. Since the supercharger must be removed for the job (12 hours labour), it makes sense to replace the coolant pipes and thermostat at the same time.
Symptoms: Coolant loss, tendency to overheat, noise from the water pump, coolant low warning
Vehicle Weaknesses 7
Air springs tear and the compressor overloads. Typical case: vehicle drops after parking, compressor and both air springs plus valve block replaced (approx. 2,200 euros). Occurs regularly despite the aluminium body.
Panoramic roof drain hoses corrode at the plastic connector fitting and break off. Water runs through the body to the audio amplifier under the driver's seat. Several vehicles written off. Annual cleaning of the drains strongly recommended.
Water ingress through failed sunroof drains or leaking windows damages control units under the front seats. Multiple ECUs affected simultaneously. Audio amplifier under the driver's seat particularly vulnerable. Total losses documented by insurance in confirmed cases.
Tailgate seal and gaskets around the rear lights leak β water collects in the spare wheel well. Water runs out when opening the tailgate after rain. Seals and light strip sealing must be replaced.
Rear brake calipers seize due to corrosion of the guide pins in the aluminium housing. Vehicle pulls to one side under braking. Regular replacement necessary. Disc life reduced to approximately 50,000 km by the binding effect.
ZF 8HP gearbox suffers harsh shifts, delayed engagement and torque converter issues when oil changes are skipped. Gearbox oil change recommended every 60,000 km. Sensor fails to detect park position. Diesel variants particularly affected.
InControl Touch Pro navigation uses TMC-based traffic data and suggests partly nonsensical routes. System freezes and restarts. Bluetooth issues and display pixel failures known. Updates improve things but do not resolve them permanently.
