Land Rover Range Rover
5.0-litre V8 Supercharged with excellent performance but well-known weaknesses. Timing chain set replacement is a matter of when, not if. Supercharger coupling and coolant pipes are further cost items. Running costs are substantial β only justifiable with a complete service history and low mileage.
Range Rover 5.0 SC 566 hp: top of the range
The most powerful production engine in the Range Rover L405 is a statement: 416 kW, supercharger character, zero compromises on comfort. The most convincing V8 offer of the generation from a driving perspective. For collectors and connoisseurs the most desirable engine in the L405.
Engine Weaknesses 5
The most critical issue on the 508PS: plastic timing chain guides and hydraulic tensioners fail from around 100,000 km β faster on the supercharged engine due to higher load. Full repair costs β¬6,000β10,000.
Symptoms: Rattling on cold start (>5s), P0008/P0016/P0017, engine light, power loss
Several plastic coolant pipes (crossover pipes, thermostat housing) behind and under the supercharger become brittle from thermal cycling. Sudden failure often causes engine damage before the driver can react.
Symptoms: Sudden coolant loss, overheating warning, steam, limp mode
The Eaton supercharger torsional coupler β a plastic and metal spring assembly β breaks apart over time. Land Rover issued a TSB. The rattling sounds like gravel inside the supercharger and disappears under higher load.
Symptoms: Rattling from the supercharger at idle (sounds like stones in a blower), decreasing supercharger output
The supercharged AJ133 also suffers from valve stem seal wear. Oil-fouled spark plugs and elevated oil consumption are typical. Replacement should be considered when timing chain repairs are carried out at the same time.
Symptoms: Blue smoke on cold start, oil-fouled spark plugs, oil consumption > 0.5L/1000km
Ignition coils on the 5.0 SC can fail β typically several at once. Poor ignition combined with oil-fouled plugs from valve seal wear accelerates the failure.
Symptoms: Rough running, P030X codes, engine light, hesitation under acceleration
Vehicle Weaknesses 7
Air springs tear and the compressor overloads. Typical case: vehicle drops after parking, compressor and both air springs plus valve block replaced (approx. 2,200 euros). Occurs regularly despite the aluminium body.
Panoramic roof drain hoses corrode at the plastic connector fitting and break off. Water runs through the body to the audio amplifier under the driver's seat. Several vehicles written off. Annual cleaning of the drains strongly recommended.
Water ingress through failed sunroof drains or leaking windows damages control units under the front seats. Multiple ECUs affected simultaneously. Audio amplifier under the driver's seat particularly vulnerable. Total losses documented by insurance in confirmed cases.
Tailgate seal and gaskets around the rear lights leak β water collects in the spare wheel well. Water runs out when opening the tailgate after rain. Seals and light strip sealing must be replaced.
Rear brake calipers seize due to corrosion of the guide pins in the aluminium housing. Vehicle pulls to one side under braking. Regular replacement necessary. Disc life reduced to approximately 50,000 km by the binding effect.
ZF 8HP gearbox suffers harsh shifts, delayed engagement and torque converter issues when oil changes are skipped. Gearbox oil change recommended every 60,000 km. Sensor fails to detect park position. Diesel variants particularly affected.
InControl Touch Pro navigation uses TMC-based traffic data and suggests partly nonsensical routes. System freezes and restarts. Bluetooth issues and display pixel failures known. Updates improve things but do not resolve them permanently.
