Land Rover Discovery P300
The 2.0L Ingenium turbocharged four-cylinder petrol shares the timing chain architecture with the diesel. Thermostat housing leaks are common and promote secondary damage to the piston cooling valve. No DPF oil dilution problem, but increased oil consumption at high mileages.
Discovery P300: petrol for short-haul fans
In the large Discovery the 221 kW turbocharged petrol does a good job β if you think short-term. Lively response, good sound, no DPF stress. For a family hauler on long runs the fuel consumption limitation becomes apparent.
Engine Weaknesses 5
The 204PT petrol shares its timing chain architecture with the diesel counterpart. Chains pre-2019 are particularly susceptible. Repair requires gearbox removal (20β30 hours labour).
Symptoms: Metallic rattling on cold start, engine warning light, rough idle, misfires
The Ingenium petrol thermostat housing is known for coolant leaks. Escaping coolant can drip onto hot engine components and damage secondary parts.
Symptoms: Coolant loss without visible external leak, fluctuating engine temperature, steam from the engine bay, sweet smell
Turbocharger failure from oil starvation and bearing damage. On the 204PT the turbo oil supply is closely linked to the timing chain lubrication situation.
Symptoms: Whistling or howling noise, power loss under acceleration, oil warning light
The turbocharged four-cylinder tends toward elevated oil consumption at higher mileages. Oil burning at piston rings and turbocharger shaft seal are the most common causes.
Symptoms: Regular top-ups required, bluish smoke on acceleration
Coolant pump malfunction causes increased cooling fan noise and a power reduction. JLR has issued service action N451.
Symptoms: Unusually loud cooling fan inside the cabin, power reduction, engine warning light
Vehicle Weaknesses 8
The Discovery 5 also suffers from the typical Land Rover air suspension weakness. Air springs become porous after 80,000β120,000 km. The compressor becomes overloaded and early system failures occur.
The InControl Touch Pro system of the Discovery 5 frequently freezes, responds with a delay or shows a black screen. Software updates help; hardware defects on the controller require replacement.
The seal around the tail light unit on the tailgate becomes porous. Water enters the boot area through the rear lights. The Gore-Tex membrane does not keep moisture out permanently.
The InControl system does not fully shut down when the vehicle is left unlocked. Battery is drained overnight. Typical weakness of all JLR models of this generation.
Rear brake discs corrode heavily between uses β typical on vehicles with little city or motorway driving. Corrosion reduces braking performance and causes vibration.
The windscreen seal becomes leaky and allows water to enter the driver or passenger footwell. Control units in the footwell can be damaged. Well-known issue in L462 forums.
The Discovery 5 has an aluminium body that is prone to galvanic corrosion where it contacts steel fasteners. Particularly visible at screw connections and brackets.
The ZF 8HP gearbox shows torque converter shudder or judder in isolated cases, particularly at low temperatures. A transmission fluid flush and software update resolves the issue in most cases.
