Lancia Voyager
VM Motori four-cylinder common rail diesel, originally developed for commercial vehicle applications. Solid basic construction, but vulnerable ancillaries: turbocharger, fuel system and EGR are the most common problem areas. Regular gearbox oil changes are critical.
Slightly stronger van diesel
A little more in reserve — barely noticeable in everyday use; it stays family transport.
Engine Weaknesses 6
The variable turbocharger (VGT) is prone to coking of the movable guide vanes from EGR soot deposits. Vanes seize: power drops and the DPF becomes overloaded.
Symptoms: Sluggish response on the throttle, power loss, black smoke clouds on acceleration, turbocharger whistling or howling.
The pressure control valve or rail pressure sensor in the high-pressure system fails: the fuel rail loses pressure, the engine stalls while driving or starts poorly.
Symptoms: Engine stalls at motorway speed, difficult cold start, prolonged cranking, battery drain from repeated start attempts.
Timing belt change recommended at 100,000 km. Cost 475–670 €. Water pump must be replaced simultaneously — otherwise the entire job will have to be repeated later.
Symptoms: No warning before failure. With worn tensioners: squealing or clicking.
The crankshaft position sensor on the VM Motori 2.8 CRD (ENS-177) typically fails when hot and causes the vehicle to cut out unexpectedly. Restart is only possible after cooling.
Symptoms: Warm engine stalls suddenly, no restart when hot, restarts after cooling down
The EGR valve on the VM Motori 2.8 CRD ENS-177 (177 hp) clogs with soot deposits. Regular cleaning or replacement every 80,000 km is recommended.
Symptoms: Hesitation at partial load, fault code P0401, power loss, rough idle
The rear crankshaft seal on the VM Motori 2.8 CRD (ENS-177) develops leaks and causes oil loss. Identical problem to the ENS-163 variant.
Symptoms: Oil loss at rear of engine, oil puddle under vehicle
Vehicle Weaknesses 8
Torque converter fails — fault codes P0740/P0741, gearbox overheats and loses traction. Repair costs extremely high (4,500 € + 3,500 € again). Wrong ATF specification accelerates the damage.
Sliding door actuator motor fails — door no longer detects end position. From 2011 only available as a complete assembly (~680 € without fitting).
Seam rust on the driver's door, boot lid and side panels — documented on vehicles 3.5 years old with 105,000 km. Aluminium bonnet prone to blistering. Warranty does not cover seam rust.
Brake calipers seize due to dirt and salt deposits on the guide pins. Unusually hot brakes after a drive.
The A/C compressor fails, often accompanied by noises at idle. The rear evaporator shows leaks. Compressor replacement costs approximately €1,600 including fitting.
The alternator decoupler pulley wears out, particularly on 2012–2013 model years. Battery voltage drops to 11.6 V while driving.
Vehicle pulls persistently to the right — known through a technical service bulletin from Chrysler/Lancia. Cause: axle geometry error from the factory, correctable by adjusting the toe.
The coolant temperature gauge fluctuates irregularly during driving. Thermostat or coolant temperature sensor faulty. The problem produces no fault codes.
