Lancia Voyager
VM Motori four-cylinder diesel with 163 hp. Sufficient for the large van, but not overpowered. Check EGR valve and turbocharger at high mileage.
Dutiful family diesel
2.8 CRD pushes the large Voyager solidly — adequate, without excitement.
Engine Weaknesses 4
The water pump on the VM Motori 2.8 CRD (ENS) typically fails from 300,000 km and can cause the timing belt to jump. Timing belt change interval: 150,000 km.
Symptoms: Coolant loss, water pump squealing, rising temperature gauge, in the worst case engine damage from belt jump
The crankshaft position sensor on the VM Motori 2.8 CRD (ENS) typically fails when the engine is hot. The warm engine stalls unexpectedly and can only be restarted after it has cooled down.
Symptoms: Warm engine stalls suddenly, will not restart until cooled, no start attempt when hot
The injectors on the VM Motori 2.8 CRD (ENS) are sensitive to fuel contamination. Poor-quality diesel or water content leads to premature injector failure.
Symptoms: Starting problems, rough running, black exhaust smoke, increased fuel consumption
The rear crankshaft seal on the VM Motori 2.8 CRD (ENS, 163 hp) typically develops leaks. Even after renewal, leaks can persist due to worn sealing surfaces at the 5th crankshaft main bearing.
Symptoms: Oil loss at rear of engine, oil puddle under vehicle, oil smell
Vehicle Weaknesses 8
Torque converter fails — fault codes P0740/P0741, gearbox overheats and loses traction. Repair costs extremely high (4,500 € + 3,500 € again). Wrong ATF specification accelerates the damage.
Sliding door actuator motor fails — door no longer detects end position. From 2011 only available as a complete assembly (~680 € without fitting).
Seam rust on the driver's door, boot lid and side panels — documented on vehicles 3.5 years old with 105,000 km. Aluminium bonnet prone to blistering. Warranty does not cover seam rust.
Brake calipers seize due to dirt and salt deposits on the guide pins. Unusually hot brakes after a drive.
The A/C compressor fails, often accompanied by noises at idle. The rear evaporator shows leaks. Compressor replacement costs approximately €1,600 including fitting.
The alternator decoupler pulley wears out, particularly on 2012–2013 model years. Battery voltage drops to 11.6 V while driving.
Vehicle pulls persistently to the right — known through a technical service bulletin from Chrysler/Lancia. Cause: axle geometry error from the factory, correctable by adjusting the toe.
The coolant temperature gauge fluctuates irregularly during driving. Thermostat or coolant temperature sensor faulty. The problem produces no fault codes.
